White-breasted Nuthatch
by Brian Gatlin
Here's one more from about a month ago at the set up perch at the waterhole that served me well for quite a while until I got bored with it. I'm contemplating trying to turn my yard into a more photogenic location, as currently most of the good perches have busy or unpleasant backgrounds.
Anyway, even though I missed shooting most of migration, on the bright side, I have Evening Grosbeaks in my yard again. Hopefully they'll stay!
I thought this turned out pretty well, especially the hints of fall in the bg. Your comments and critiques are appreciated. Please view larger version if possible.
Canon 7D, 500mm + 1.4x TC, tripod
1/200, f/8, ISO 640
Crop to 81% (14.6 of 18MP). NR on bg, sharpening on bird. Natural light, set up perch.

20 commentsI wish for more DOF only because that is a GORGEOUS perch... it adds so much character to the shot.

Well done.
Geoff.
Love the pose of the nuthatch, the head angle and background, I especially enjoy the branch the bird is perched on, the worm holes add a lot to the image. Lovely light and details, dof looks fine to me, it is sharp where it needs to be.
superb detail, great pose and perch. Beautiful shot.
The comp is perfect as you have the bird angled down on that angled perch with all the character. Really like this.
