Common Tern Flight

Yet another Common Tern from the summer. Too bad the wing intercepted the tail....

"Tern Island", Moriches Bay.

Nikon D300s 300 f4 + 1.7X TC HH
f/8
1/2500s
ISO 640

Lowered exposure a touch, added canvas to bottom and left, cropped to 5X3 but overall it's probably full frame or close to.

Hmmm, I don't really interpret the intersecting wing as a problem Luke. I do however really like the sharp flight shot and clean background with nice color. The catchlight is critical in this one! :toast:

Very nice Luke
The 300 is your choice for HH shots of birds in flight? I have observed more 300 here lately for these tough captures. What's your feeling?

Lovely flight shot - sharp, good eye contact and exposure is spot-on.

The wing intercepting the tail is not an issue for me Luke. I agree, catchlight is critical. I like the feel of the image. My only very small nit is I wish the far wing was a bit sharper near the tip, but small nit on a very nice flight shot.

sweet, Luke. love the pose, comp, and catchlight. agree that the only (very small) nit is that it would be nice to have the wing sharper.

Luke,

I don't see that the wing intersecting the tail in your image as an issue at all. I actually think that the wing crossing the tail adds a nice touch of interest and tension. I adore the soft hues in the background and how well the tern stands out from it. Excellent work getting the black eye to show so well in the black cap too, that is not always easy to do. I like the comp you used and the nice view of this tern's small feet.

Luke, you once told me in a comment that I was too hard on myself in evaluating my own images. I think you're doing that here about the crossed feathers. I don't see it as an issue at all. I think this is an excellent image. I love the flight posture with the bird presenting the ventral surface with nice white exposure and the bit of a head turn that caught the light in the eye. The background is wonderful. Only nit I have is what appears to be a bit of a halo around the black cap and bill.

I like this a lot Luke. It has a graceful look to it, enhanced by the pose and the muted sky. Very nice! :toast:

Exposure is spot on. And I like the wing positoning as it adds more of a sense of movement than just two wings pinned in a perfect stance.

The catchlight makes this for me - tough to get with Terns.
