Towering Mountain

I called this photo Towering Mountain because when I took it I was looking at the mountain and it was so much taller than the small trees down below. If I could have zoomed out more I would have taken a picture of the top of the mountain with the trees down at the bottom.

This is a photo of El Capitan in Yosemite. We went there for one day on Veteran's Day last week.

I used a Canon D30 digital camera with 28-85mm lens. The camera was on auto exposure auto focus and was hand held.

I would like your comments and feedback on how to make it better if I ever get to re-take it.

Thank You.

That's a gorgeous view of El Cap, I love the color and detail in the rock. I really like the composition, my only suggestion might be to crop out that tiny speck of sky in the URHC.

Jason Kim,
Thank you for noticing the little bit of sky. I never would have noticed it on my own.

Zaynab,

Welcome to NPN and the ES&S Gallery! I'm sorry, but this is too coincidental not to ask.... you wouldn't happen to be related to another Ismail who just happened to have been in Yosemite on the same day as you? I'm guessing.... son? brother, uncle maybe.... And my apologies if not related and it's all a coincidence... I welcome you just the same!

Now this just may be the most photographed piece of Granite in the world and I've never seen a composition or capture of this rock like this before. I think this is wonderful! Great job including the oaks and pines for scale.

Only two suggestions. First the patch of sky which I didn't notice either and second, I would try and selectively paint down, or reduce the highlights in the rock face; mostly just above the treeline on the left, extending to about half way up the face. It's a little bright in that area. Otherwise, this is an exceptional capture and representation of El Capitan.

Congrats and welcome aboard!

Lon

Lon,
Thank you for the suggestions on how to make my photos better. The person who was with me at Yosemite was my father Youssef. We set up my membership this evening thank you for the feedback.

Make it better? I don't see how really! This works very effectively IMO. Great first post, and welcome. Crop that tiny bit of blue in the upper right and call it done!

Zaynab,

You know how much I liked this photo and was wishing that I had seen this and photographed it as well. I did not see that small bit of sky either while we worked on this image together. Everyone seems to like this, congratulations! :toast:

Great first post Zaynab, Agree with Lon the highlight are a tad bright, but keep this one and save any editign as a new file. It's definitely a keeper and a very creative image of this oft photographed Monolith. Oh welcome aboard.

This is lovely, Zaynab. I wish I had climbed this wall when I was younger--ah, well. I have seen many shots of the 'The Captain' and I don't recall seeing one with such a distinctive design. The quality of the light is very nice and you've captured it very well.

Well done, and welcome to NPN!

Be sure to visit the CANP Forum and introduce yourself. You are also cordially invited to post California images at the CANP critique gallery.

Welcome!

This is a wonderful perspective of a much photographed icon, Zaynab, and it is really outstanding. The tones in the rock are beautiful, and I really like how you have excluded the top of El Capitan, thus allowing the viewer's eye to just wander about the rock face. Excellent first post and welcome to ESS. It is really wonderful that you and your father can share these experiences.

the trees really put the scale in perspective. the wall is wonderful, perhaps highlights need to be pulled back a touch.

What a dynamic and bold presentation! Your choice of composition really brings out the size and details of the rock face. Besides the blue spot I wouldn't touch a thing. Print it large and hang it proudly!!! :toast:

I'm w/ Jason, Zaynab. Crop out that tiny bit of sky in the URC & this is perfect. I like it better as-is than I would with the top of the mountain in the frame. The current composition depicts the massive scale of the wall and leaves my imagination to wonder just how much taller that mountain is. Great photograph!

Welcome aboard Zaynab, and wonderful first post. I love the subtle colors of the granite face, and the composition expresses the vastness of the rock face nicely. Looking forward to seeing more posts.

Well seen and captured. I like that you can't see the peak, gives El Cap seemingly endless grandeur. The way the light is hitting this allows for a lot of detail in the rocks to come out.

Very cool that you and your Dad share a hobby and worked this together.

Zaynab,

Welcome to NPN! Great first post, too! I love the soaring granite wall behind the golds and greens of the trees at the bottom. Fine Yosemite image.

WOW, this is very nice indeed, Zaynab. The few technical adjustments being suggested are some minor & well thought enhancements to think about. But, this image as is is extremely impressive IMVHO. :toast:

Zaynab, Interesting take on on El Cap, I like that you see things differently. Meaning your first snap isn't iconic, iconic is nice but it's nice to see things from a new perspective. It's good to see the family work here on NPN.
