Earth, Sea & Sky Gallery - 1st Honorable Mention
A Night To Remember

Truly a stunning experience standing out in a partially frozen river at night, in complete darkness, witnessing natures finest lightshow.

I never shoot the aurora just focusing on the aurora. I always take pride in doing these in the same way i do normal landscapes. My goal is to take aurorashots that would have value even without the aurora.

For this shot i covered the sky for the majority of the exposure (126 sec) and then revealing the sky for the last 20 secs. This made the foreground just as good as the sky.

Hope you like it! (had to compress it quite heavily to get it out on npn...)

-Arild-

ps. i`m extremely busy these days and barely have the time to post this. So i`m sorry for not being very active lately..

Amazing! I don't know if I've ever seen anything like this. The aurora, reflection, and ice crystals are awesome. Only nit would be (and it is a mior one) that I would prefer more separation from the edge in the lrc rocks, but that might not have been possible. Just wish I could see it bigger!

This is a special image, Arild. Congrats!

Thanks Joseph! The lrc is overlapped by another rock (you can see a hint of it just above the rocks) so that problem was unavoidable...

This rocks, Arild! :toast: It must have been humbling to witness this first hand. I love the graceful curve of the aurora and it's reflection in the water. This image has a calmness and serenity to it.

Looks outstanding! Masterful exposure. I'm wondering how much noise is created with an image like this and if you required much noise reduction software during processing. Great use of FG and the surrounding landscape.

Thx everyone!

Harry, regarding noise. I shot this at iso 800. The noise was only noticeable in the darkest shadowareas especially in the lower left corner. I used Noiseware on the default nightshot setting. That took care of it easily. So basically noise wasnt much of an issue in this one. Theres a big difference in iso 800 & 1600 on the old 5d. iso 1600 means you have to take care of the noise no matter what. Iso 800 is a lot better. I have a print of this one ready as we speak and it looks pretty damn good...

WOW! This is just stunning! I can't imagine how wonderful it must have been to witness this. The trees on the left all appear to be leaning to the left. Don't know if that's natural or wide angle distortion. Minor nit though. This is just outstanding!

thx everyone...really was a thrill to stand there during the exposure and then seing the result on the display..

What did i use to cover the sky. A cloth...a really simple stiff kitchencloth :-) But its much better and easier to just use a piece of hard dark paperboard.

Arlid, what an amazing image. Simply stunning! :toast:

I have never seen the aurora in person but in videos I've seen the color seems to dance around the sky in constant motion. Your image and techs bring a question to mind. At such a long exposure why is there no movement in the aurora and it's reflection? I would have expected a wash of color. Just curious.

With work like yours I don't mind waiting so long to see more. Each has been stunning. And this one is definitely a great photograph and shows your understanding of your subject matter very well. Very nice technique. The FG hoar frost on the rocks is just as amazing as the light in the sky. Really great work.

As good as any aurora shot I've seen and that's plenty. The main reason is that it's a great landscape shot that happens to have a special phenomenon that takes it over the top. Super.

Oh wow. Aurora images are gorgeous to view but most don't have the sense of composition to marry it with, this is a magnificent exception and yes I agree the very best aurora image I have seen and a classicly fine landscape in its own right. This is one shot that I imagine would be remarkably difficult to replicate on film.

Holy Cow! I agree with the others--ive seen thousands of great landscapes in this gallery--and this is definitely a top 10 if not top 5 for me. Just incredible. I do have one minor suggestion, which is just personal taste but ill give it to you anyways: i think you should tone down the highlites just a tad--IMO, they should be a supporting player here (despite your comments) and not competing with the main show (the aurora). The strength of this shot is that the aurora is completely and amazingly natural, but the ice looks a little like a flashlight was shined on it.

About the foreground frost...the brightness and the fact that the closest rocks are slightly out of focus. I had a brilliantly bright moon behind me illuminating the frosted rocks. I almost had to turn down the brightness in post. Exposing for over 2 minutes made them stand out quite much...

The slightly out of focus rocks is the downside of shooting wide open at infinity focus...its just part of the deal.
