clashing horns

It is a long time I do not post anything in this gallery... But here it comes a picture.

The Alpine ibex (Capra ibex) is the symbol of Gran Paradiso National Park (GPNP), in Italy, where the only original population of this species survived at the end of nineteen Century, with few tens of individuals. Since then, the ibex population at GPNP grew up to a few thousand individuals, and ibex was introduced in other alpine areas of Italy, France, Switzerland and Germany.

From mid November to mid December, male ibex fight with each other for hours, clashing their horns, to establish the hierarchy for reproduction. In this period, the characteristic sound of the horn clash fills the high mountains where the ibex live.

This picture was taken yesterday, during a light snowfall, at Valnontey, one of the valleys of GPNP. Nikon FX, Nikkor 24-70. The large version provides more detail.

The contours in this photo are great... the position of the "attacker" above the "defender" echoing the curve of the hillside and the trees. The stone in the lower right is an unfortunate distraction, but overall it's a nice capture of the action.

Nice action and behavior shot Antonello, nice detail in their coats. The tree line in the background creates a very appealing 3D like depth to the image when viewing the large version. I would suggest cloning snow over the dark lower RH corner.

Thanks for the comments! I cloned away the little rock and yes, there is less distraction from the main action...

Hi Antonella,

Given this was shot with a 24-70 lens on a full-frame action, you must have been pretty darned close to the action! The larger version does far more justice to this shot - love the eye on the Ibex to the left (a look of impending doom if I ever saw one!!). I'm in agreement with the previous comments about the flow/contours of this image being very good. To me the subjects themselves look like they could use a little careful selective brightening (i.e., they look a little under-exposed to me). I'd probably brighten up the entire scene a little (maybe 1/3 to 1/2 a stop) and then re-assess to see if the subjects need a little more brightening themselves (especially in the shaded regions).

But very good action overall and a really appealing image as posted - thanks for sharing it!

Cheers...

Brad

I love that amazing action. The rock being gone does eliminate the distraction. It must have been incredible to witness this interaction.

Exceptional. I really like the eye in the downhill ibex.

Love the action! :toast: I agree with selective lightening of the rams. Also, and it is hard to tell for sure, but I am thinking they might be slightly over-sharpened! This is a cool enough capture to warrant your efforts to tweak some subtle improvements.

Thank you all for the comments and suggestions! I'll try to work more on the PP and implement
the improvements you mentioned. I already did some selective lighting on the rams and will try to
enhance it further, the danger is to increase color noise...

(as for being close to the rams: yes I was at about 4 meters, ibex at GPNP are quite
confident and when in fighting excitement they do not care much about what happens around...
On the other hand, I was happy they did not decide I was a potential competitor and started
fighting with me... )

Tough range to cover in this shot. The action is right on. It must have been a treat to be there.
Cheers
