Ice Caves + picture

This was shot a couple of years ago at the Ice Caves on Lake Superior, Main Land Sea Caves in summer. The location is the very northern tip of Wisconsin near Cornucopia. It is about a 1 1/2 mi walk from Meyers Beach. Some years you can't get out to them because the ice is not safe. I was looking forward to last year but broke my leg in Dec. Really hope to make it out there this winter now. It is usually Feb before there is access. Need lots of 20-30 below 0 weather to freeze up the ice to make it safe enough. This picture is no where near as pretty as it can get, some winters it is spectacular, and I hope this will be one of those.

Thanks Charlie. The light here was tough, but I liked the looks of the scene so decided to shoot it anyways. There are several caves that stretch for maybe another 1/2 mile once you are out there. This is the big opening of probably the biggest one. I came in from a smaller opening off to the left of this. The smaller caves are probably more interesting when there is a lot of ice. I will look and see if I can post something from a good year too.
Late in the day it can really get pretty and it is nice to stay for the sunset also. A few years ago I headed back to my truck after sunset when it was close to 20 below and a strong wind in my face. I was very glad to see my truck that night, and slept very good. Thanks, Nick

Very interesting place, Nick. I kinda feel like a cooler representation of the cave itself (color temp) would fit the 'ice cave' feeling more, but the light does look to be more towards the ends of the day. There seems to be some minor haloing around the edges that could be touched up but overall pretty nice with the blend. The lower-left cave wall seems a tad bright/flat as well. Inside-looking-out comps are not the easiest to put together, that's for sure. I do like this and agree it seems there's even more potential at this spot.

Great area Nick

The shot looks great and of course there are probably many options for shots here.
I do agree a later or pre-sunrise cool version would probably be kick-butt

Thanks guys for the comments so far on this. This does have a warmer feel than you would think of at the Ice Caves. I guess the later afternoon light did have that, and it was a warmer day than normal too.
The colder weather and the ice I saw in the Wisconsin River this morning made me think of this, even though it will probably be 2 months yet before we can get out there, if at all. Thanks much, Nick

Does look like a neat place. Almost missed the ice it blends in so well with the rocks. Here's hoping for cold weather to facilitate the exploration.

Cool place and nice composition! Overall I think the image is a bit too contrasty. There is also some haloing on the left and top of the cave. Looks like the light was a bear to deal with but you handled it pretty well! I'm surprised at how much detail you retained in the shadows! Should be able to fix up those minor nits. Good job!! :toast:

What an interesting place, I'm glad you shared this with us. I've never seen anything like it. There does seem to be a ton of potential here so I hope you're rewarded with fantastic conditions the next time you make the effort to get here. Be careful out there.

A very intriguing location, probably cold in there. This image makes me want to spend time there to see how different light would impact the ice. I think I'd like to see more of the cave and less of the water and sky, but a neat composition and find.

What a neat looking area Nick. The farthest red cliff looks like it has some fantastic potential as well. Well I hope it freezes up for you again this year.

Thought I would add a little different view of one of the caves. This is one of the smaller caves and I had to lay down and crawl back in. It was pretty dark and kind of errie, but when I turned my light on it was awesome. Hope to post a few more of these images. Nick

That ice is truly something special! I like the way this is construced. At first glance it looked like an underground cave opened up with the stalactites glowing in the sunshine. Best of luck in getting there this year, Nick!
My only nit is the halo effect around the cave between the rock and the sky from the blend.

Yeah, very cool! I hope you can get beck. Does this get to the point that there are ice stalactites hanging from the cieling?

Love that warm light, Nick. Looks like some bitter cold weather to have to deal with. Love the ice formations and how they contrast with the rock.

Thanks to all of you for your comments and suggestions. I do appreciate them, and they are always helpful.
Chris, It does indeed. I hope this year it will work out and I can show more of that.
Hi Tom, It was great running into you again this year in the UP. I think we will remember that rainbow for a long time. Maybe you, Kevin and myself can get a trip together for the ice caves. As it gets closer to that time I will keep checking with the Apostle Island National Lakeshore people for conditions. They stay up to date on conditions that would allow access to the caves. We'll stay in touch.
Kevin, That would be great if we could work that out. Thanks, Nick.

Here is another picture of the entrance to another one of the caves. Thought I would post it to give some of you another look at what it might be like there. Thanks again, Nick
