Rough-legged Hawk

First day out in well over a month. It was another typical winter (well, fall) day on the grasslands in the center of the state. Well over 100 raptors, with about 80% of them Rough-legged Hawks. For the most part, they're skittish, but every once in a while you find the oddball like this one, who sits there while you click away. Given the density of raptors there, you nearly always find some very cooperative birds.

Canon 50D, 400 5.6L, ISO 400, 1/500, f7.1, no flash.

Terry, just exceptional detail.
Great pose, stare, perfect BG, and that starburst of feathers just takes this over the teop.
EP material for sure.

Must be amazing to have so many raptors together. They must give the rodents? a hammering. The only time you'd see anywhere near that number here would be at an outback rubbish tip with the Black Kites (hardly the same). Magic detail in the larger version and nice eye contact

cheers

Sweet shot of this roughie Terry. Really nice exposure, sharpness, and detail. Very natural looking. The directional light is very nice as it adds depth and the BG is perfect for the colors of this bird. Well done.

I love this Terry, for lots of reasons. The soft light does wonders for this especially handsome species. I really enjoy the relaxed pose. The direct stare from the hawk is one of the best ones I've seen with wonderful detail in both eyes - especially considering the directional light. The complementary background colors are very flattering for the hawk. I really like everything here except for the fact that you have all of our roughies!
