This bird was nice enough to come right to me as I sat camoflaged on the edge of a wetland the other day. I like the position of the bird in this shot as well as the light and detail. Please view the larger version as the detail is much better. Thanks so much for looking.

Ron,
I am reluctant to Critique your work because your skill level is so far advanced but the head area looks a little "washed" to me. I do not know if that is the correct term but that area does not look like the quality that I always see in your work.
As you state the position of the bird and to me the look in it eye are wonderfull.

Ron,

Always fun to get the eye sharp on this species. Lighting was not optimal, but not overly harsh. I think the bird does look over sharpened though (particularly the larger) and I think the light on the face could be lowered a bit as it's a little too light.

Not sure what happened with this image based on the the comments so far. This is early morning light, some of the best we get here and it was in a great direction to get the bird lit up nicely. Also, I did not apply but 10% sharpening to the bird in smart sharpen, so I just don't see how it could be oversharpened. I processed this image as I always do, so the way I reduced image size for NPN should not have caused the over-sharpened look, which to be truthful I do not see. Oh well you win some and you lose some.

Really like the flight angle & lights direction, and early light's the best for birding in my experience. Don't think it's over sharpened. I find that at ISO 800 and above with the M3, normal/light smart sharpening can sometimes appear over-sharp at web sizes..But looks fine at the larger print size..
Well done Ron! :toast:

Very interesting view of this bird, Ron. It looks so streamlined: it resembles a bullet with wings. I don't detect evidence of oversharpening. Exposure is o.k. too. However, I do see some lack of detail, for example, in the white area next to the wing. However, maybe in this species feather structure is very fine and just not resolvable at this distance, even with your fine camera/lens system. :toast:

Amazing you can catch a bird that moves as fast as these so tack sharp. I don't see the oversharpening either. Such a look of determination on that face.

Ron,

The straw colored eeyes of this juvenile bird look much less vibrant than the yellow of the adult male's eyes and may contribute to the comments about the head looking light. I'd be tempted to slightly darken the head selctively and see how that looks. Love the pose and the look at the eye.

Ron, these birds aren't always fast flyers but based on the wing position I'd say this one was "motivating" and I'm impressed that you got it in frame at all. Very sharp and I see no evidence of over sharpening. That problematic white rump patch looks good. I might reduce exposure a bit on the face just to see how it looks but this is very nice as presented.
