Shot this morning, wandering around the Oakland Hills with fellow NPN'r Jimmy Gekas. We were hoping for overcast, but had sunshine to provide these intense beams. I hope you enjoy it, and thank you for your thoughts. large version included.

D200,
18-70mm,

Thanks,
Chris

Chris: A pretty darn good Flora image  . Superb lighting control. Did you bounce or flash some light on the FG trunk? Superb shot. >=))>

Nice capture Chris. The large trunk is a bit overwhelming but the awesome light and great details makes this a standout IMO.

Thanks Bill!
No flash or any artificial light used here. Just thought I had a viable shot from the histogram and went with it. Thanks again.

Fantastic. Love how you kept the perfect texture in the foreground bark. Is this a blend. I'm just saying the light is soooo nice.

Neat shot, although the FG trunk is a little to bright for me, perhaps darkening it just a little might work better. The shadows, especially at the top of the trunk, look a little 'washed out' if that makes sense. The light falling on the trunk to the left looks great.

Nicely done! I have to wait until I get home to check my shots out. Not sure I will come close to this! Is there a bit of flare on the trunk? I can barely see three orange-ish circles. Seems like it could be an easy fix. :toast:

A real beauty! I love how your comp makes a virtue out of the necessity of keeping the sun out of the frame.

This IS really overwhelming-- in a tremendously good way !! The combination of the size of the main tree trunk and the radiance of the beams makes me want to pay homage. Thanks for such an inspiring photo.

You captured some really nice light here Chris, and your comp is wonderful. Great processing to keep all the details and texture in the main trunk.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it!

Jimmy, Yes, I see them too. pretty faint, but now that I know they're there, I'll see about fixing it when I return at the end of the week from work related stuff.

Thanks,
Chris

There are some great redwood groves in the Oakland Hills. Nice light and image.

This is great, Chris! The light beams are fantastic with excellent processing to maintain shadow and highlight detail. I would deepen the shadows a touch and fix that minor flare, but it looks great as is.

This is really nice Chris, I like the lines and textures created with the massive trunks, and the beams of light behind make the image stand out. Nice eye, and great job processing.

Chris,

Dang-it! I knew I should have met up with you guys! Those are some beautiful rays of sunshine. I'm a little torn though deciding if the trunk is just too large in the frame. I'm leaning towards not because the light is powerful as well and I think they balance each other out pretty well. And I think you've retained just enough detail too. So in the end, you did a great job with this one.

Hope the rest the morning was just as good. Next time....

I really like this, Chris. The light beams are super and I think the big tree works very nice. Looks great with the beams coming in front of the farther back trees too. Great comp and the vert lines of the trees is so nice with the angle lines from the sun. Nice work!

Pretty awesome, Chris, though for me, it's really screaming for a wider angle - did you get one? The large trunk is a bit too prominent for my preference

Other than that I'm seeing the same sort of funny colored bands that Jimmy G. referenced, I think this is beautiful. It's surprising that it can work with so much of the frame dedicated to dark and shadowy tree trunks, but it does work very well.
