Grouse Feather

This was taken in early November on a small stream in the northern Adirondacks. The spruce grouse feather was found, and I placed it in the stream where it hung up against a small branch. Minor color and contrast adjustments; T1i, 57mm, f16, 1/10s, ISO400, tripod.

Thanks for looking, C&C welcome.

Beautiful shot - I really like this. Your chosen shutter speed is perfect for the water motion. Very, very nice.

Nice composition and color. I find the reflections on the ice at the top of the photo somewhat distracting from the great feather. I might try cropping the top a little or softening the contrast on the reflections.

Ron - For some reason, maybe the abstract nature, or the flow of water/ice and colors presented but the top part of the image holds more interest to me than the feather. It is a bbeautiful feather, though. Nice find.

I like the comp and that you were able to bring together several different items into this small scene :wavey:

That feather jumps off the screen! Great arrangements of colors and shapes. I also like this cropped from the top to about a 4x5 aspect ratio.

The ice on the rocks has a very interesting plastic feel. For me at least, there is enough interest in the intimate details that the grouse feather maybe isn't needed.

Very nice. Reminds me of Eliot Porter's classic style of work. Those ripples in the water (or ice?) at the top of the frame add some really nice patterns to this.

Appreciate the feedback on this. Just a note, this is a gently flowing little brook. No ice. The shutter speed managed to basically stop the water, thus the reflections and patterns at the top of the image. Some leaves were submerged, others partially submerged, and others not at all. No polarizer.

Ron,

Never would have guessed this was placed. Entirely possible for this to be a found scene. As I look at this, there seems to be more and more going on the longer I look. The abstract patterns in the upper half are quite amazing and could be their own image. I'm wondering if you worked this little scene more.

This also works with the feather too because the feather has it's own nice patterns AND what I find interesting is that the feather is pretty much b&w which creates an interesting color contrast with the rest of the scene.

Ooh, and I just noticed the large submerged leaf on the right? This does have a lot going on - a lot of very cool things.

For this one though, I might consider cropping the top to just below the larger orangish rock in the UL and let the feather take center stage. THEN, crop the feather out completely for a horizontal abstract of the top. So much here, but it's all good.
