I was out at Montrose beach this morning in Chicago and as I was walking back to my car, I noticed this rabbit that clearly had something wrong with it as it was listing to one side and could only run in tight circles. I put my 600mm lens, Mk3, and tripod in the car and walked over to see what the deal was. The rabbit ran when I was about 3 feet away and slid under the fence. I decided to let it be and walked back around to my car. When I turned back to look, this Cooper's Hawk swooped in a started attacking the rabbit. It made several runs at it and fortunately I had my 50D with my new 70-200mm f/2.8 II with me and I walked right up to the action and started shooting. I have about 7 good shots, so I thought I would post at least one. I liked this because the rabbit is in mid-air and snow is flying.

Canon 50 D
Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM II
ISO 320, 1/4000th@f/4, AvMode, Eval 0 comp
9:35am, 22 degrees
LR 3.3, PSE9: Crop, adj shadows, sharpen, cloned out branch

WOW! What a spectacular shot! The fact this happened at Montrose beach in Chicago(my home town) makes it even cooler. Congrats you nailed an awesome opportunity like this. Love the flying snow, sharpness and even the tree shadows on the snow.

The hawk did not get the rabbit while I was there. I think it was just too big for him. When I left the scene, the rabbit was under a bush and the hawk was sitting in a tree about 10 feet above it. So, not sure what happened in the end.

fantastic action shot, Bryan! what a moment, and how exciting to capture it so well! I just know I would botch the same situation in all the excitement. sharpness is excellent for a shot like this. If I were to pick compositional nits, I'd like a little more room on the left if you have it, and perhaps less on the right, but give me a break, who cares about that with a shot like this! :toast: :toast:

There's precious little that I can add to the comments already on here; except to say that nature photography is about taking those fleeting chances and making the most of them which you have done in style.

I guess I'm identifying with the poor rabbit in this compelling photograph. I feel a sense of absolute desperation. Your story only adds to the sensation. Not only a superb avian image but a great piece of storytelling (both with photo and with words). The image itself is just beautiful and highly compelling. Congratulations for the EP, well deserved.

Might consider softening the tree branch on the left, but believe it's not a terrible distraction.

The final tah-dah! for me is that this is seen and captured in a metropolis!

An absolutely incredible capture, Bryan! Congratulations on a well-deserved EP! I do prefer the original post over the re-post, however. The color and contrast of the original post look fine to me; in my view, the branches add the perspective of habitat to the image.
