Matthews River Mounntain

Taken on south slope of Brooks Range last August.

Hand held Nikon D700 with manual 28 mm lens.

This is an pseudo HDR representation.

Is the color overdone? Other comments criticisms sought.

The colors look fine to me - but the image lacks depth. Softer light would make a big difference, here. Also, the image seems a bit soft, especially in the distance.

You've done a good job with a very difficult landscape. There's a lot of "clutter" here to work with, but you've handled it pretty well. The composition works well. I would crop slightly from the left - to remove the tree that is cut in half.

Thanks for posting in the anonymous gallery! :)

Best,
Varina

Varina,
I guess having been there I know the "depth" but I see what you are saying.
What would you think if I darkened the mountains in the distance. Would that help the "depth" perception?
I also lightened the dark cliff which is a "leading line" for depth. Perhaps darkening it to original would help?
Thanks for your input.

Yes - I think darkening the mountain would help... as long as you are careful to maintain good contrast in that area. You should be able to re-post the photo using the browse button under the comment box.

I'll look forward to seeing an update!

Varina,
First, thanks for your time. Yes this photo is "busy" and I've learned something from that.
I'll try to upload. I darkened the cliff for line; darkened the foreground and lightened the distant mountains a tad.
I did forget to crop the tree on the left.
Thank you again,

I think you could cut back on the blues just a smidgeon. I think that might increase the DOF you already have in the foreground.

Nice DOF in the foreground.

Is another try with the opposite approach; darker foreground and lighter background as suggested by Carol.

Very nice scene. Perhaps slightly overdone color (sky) and local contrast. This gives it a bit of a surreal effect that is not really needed for my tast.

Nope, stick with the second one, it's the best of the three.

Not a huge fan of photomatix and the such, but this is pretty good work considering. Throw in some moving clouds or water..maybe some windy conditions..and you're screwed. ;\

Looks like an awesome area btw.

Here, the eye goes to the lightest part of the image and that's the FG evergreens in the lower right. The curved lines created by the hills are an attraction. I guess the biggest question I have is What is the subject?

This is a very beautiful shot, I do think there is a bit to much blue in the sky. I would de-saturate it just a tab. This rest of the composition is great. good job processing.
