Quiet Light

Happy New Year!

An image from a recent quick early morning trip up one of the local mountains. The first rays of sunrise didn't quite make it due to some clouds off to the south east. still a wonderful time to be in the alpine.

Ian, the dark space is actually looking down into the shadow of the next valley over.

This is great Adam! I love the minimalism here! That light is sweeeeet, and the layers create a great depth here. What focal length was this shot at?

Wonderful image! Love the layers and cool blue shadows that fit the snowy landscape so well. Gorgeous light and the drifting around the main tree is too cool! :toast:

Wow, I really like this Adam. The trees and snow look wonderful. I like the layers created by the different mounds here alot. I thought that was probably dark sky at first too. Cool that it is shadow from next valley over. Really nice, I enjoy looking at this very much.

I cant tell if you're shooting in to a shadowy hill or polarized alpine sky but hot damn that light is sick. Love the negative space the bg creates. Bet a b/w would be epic as well. Kudos here!

Awesome shot, Adam!! The title truly reflects the scene... so tranquil and surreal. The lines and differing sizes of trees makes for a wonderful composition!! Well executed! :toast:

Very Cool Adam! I really like the transition from cool to warm colors  I visited your website, very nice work, I see we are not to far apart! I assume you were up in MT Seymour? I have been planning to get down there soon to shoot for evening color.

Hey James, yes location is Mt. Seymour, very quick for me to get to. Snow must be great up at Whistler right now? Have you been up to Garibaldi Lake or Elfin this year?

Yes, I have some small multi-night trips planned with snowshoes. I wish the accessibility was as easy as Mt Seymour  Avalanche danger also make me a bit nervous  Elfin lakes should be quite safe, I also want to go up through Helm's pass, to a ridge near Black Tusk to get some morning light shots. Another option would be up in Tricounni meadows, there are a couple of high elevation lakes up there. I am outfitted for winter camping. I would like to hook up with you some time

Though it makes for immediate impact and is great for the graphic simplicity of the photo, my primary response to the dark shadow at the top is on of being disconcerted (clearly I'm a huge minority in this, judging by the comments). I try very hard not to play a skeptics role with photographs, but here I wish for something a little more "understandable", if you know what I mean. Everything else about this image is utterly mesmerizing. If the contrast between light and dark has been enhanced at all, I would claim that was unnecessary.

This is an amazing shot!! It doesn't even look real. A shot like this seems like it could only be from either a dream, or a computer generated 3D image. You have really cornered the market on surreal snow imagery.

Kent, I can see your point and for what it's worth I did add some contrast to bring out the highlights of the snow. First thing in the morning the valley adjacent to this spot is very dark, filled with conifers. Here is an image taken several years ago with a 4x5 at more or less the same spot, again the trees below are very dark. No contrast added to this image, more or less a straight scan.

Thanks all for your comments.
