Manistee River Winter

This was taken a couple of years ago and is along the North Country Trail following the Manistee River. It is very rare that we see blue sky after a snowstorm. Lucky I got there when I did also as the snow was starting to melt off of the trees just as I finished.

A bit of history is that during Michigan's logging era in the 1800's logs from the forests were rolled down the banks to the river and then floated to the mills in the spring. There were no trees left on the banks and the erosion must have been terrible.

Nikon D2x, f11, 1/100 sec., color filter which hasn't been used since.

Beautiful frosting on the trees. The sky is interesting but to my taste, I think I prefer a tighter framing around the stretch of river and surrounding trees.

Beautiful Tom, and I love the ess curve in the river. The top intruding branch on the left bothers me a little.

That is a beautiful setting, Tom. Sounds like you caught it just in time. I like the looks of the water too, and the curve just adds to it. Hard to beat fresh snow like that.

I like the general light here and the texture it reveals. Sort of wondering if B&W might be an option.

This frosted scene is excellent!
I'd crop off some of the sky.

I think this could be a beautiful B&W with the sky cropped Tom. I might push the white a little higher and darken the creek a touch. I can understand why you wanted to show the blue skies after a lovely dusting of snow though. Cheers
