I haven't posted in the flora gallery in ages, even though a love of wildflowers first brought me to photography. I haven't made many close-ups lately, but thanks to Bill Fach for encouraging me to post some of my other work.

90mm lens
warming polarizer
Velvia 100

I'd appreciate your comments!

Lori: Great to have you posting here and don't think you need to limit yourself to closeups. This is exactly the kind of image I hoped you would post. I'm especially looking forward to what you shoot in the spring. As for this, I think its terrific. I like the lush undergrowth and the tangle of limbs and branches. My only wish is that the 4x5 detail would come through better on the web. Great to have you aboard and looking forward to more. >=))>

Lori, This is extremely interesting. IMO, the greenery at the base of the tree almost (not quite) overshadows the subject. Not sure what to suggest.

Had you considered converting this to B & W. It might be quite dramatic.

Cheers,

Carol

I like this very much Lori. Old rhododendron thickets are certainly familiar enough to those of us who tromp around in the appalachians but depicting the hoary, twisted reality of them is difficult and you've done really well here. My only nit might be that it looks a little too warm on my monitor but that's mostly a matter of personal taste anyway.

Thanks for the comments so far, everyone. Carol, actually the greenery at the base of the rhododendron IS as much the subject as the rhodie itself. I haven't thought about B&W here. Will give it a shot. Robert, I think you're right--a very slight increase in the blue channel may be in order.

Oh, yes! I am glad he did! This is beautiful, Lori! Love it. The big branches of the rhodie are so cool and look great surrounded by the lush greens and sprinkling of flowers. Super. Don't stay away so long, now, okay?

Delightful, Lori. I love the twisty branches and I think the greenery serves as a good anchor for the image. The color and lighting are spot on. Looking forward to seeing more of you here.

Absolutely beautiful! I think these types of shots are the most challenging compositionally and you have done an excellent job here. Can't wait to see more!

Lori:
It's great to see someone able to present such an unwieldy subject so beautifully. Interesting POV looking down onto the base of the bush. Did you have to climb up on a rock to shoot this? - the reason I ask is because I am not a tall person (smile).

Gary, I was backed as far as I could go into some rhodie branches, but the camera was only about 4 ft off the ground here. 90mm is a wide angle lens on 4x5 (equivalent to a 20 to 24 mm lens on 35mm) and therefore exaggerates that "looking down" perspective.

Thanks again for the comments, all!

Wonderful color! The light also shows that element as well as the textures off to their best. :toast:
