Beautiful colors are the outstanding characteristic of this image for me, Sandy. Many edges of the bird appear sharp but I don't see detail in the body of the bird that I am accustomed to. It could be how the multi-flash light reflects from the bird. Anyway, the bird and background are beautiful with a lovely spread pose. A small nit is the multi-flash catchlight in the eye that you could consider simplifying. :toast:

Hi Sandy: Great pose captured. I really enjoy multi-flash hummingbird photography as well. As Steve noted, there is no detail in the body. I don't know if this is a NR issue. Birds head looks pretty sharp, and at f/22 the body should be as well. Since the exposure is really based on the flash speed, it isn't motion blur. hmmm...

Nits noted. This is a lovely photo as posted. Why the settings? f22? Just curious, because I don't know.

Hi Sandy,

Great shot. The species is Chestnut-breasted Coronet. I guess you took it at Guango or San Isidro.

Cheers,
Iain

Excellent catch Sandy  I am wondering about the detail loss in the body too. I have finally been editing my photos from this trip and I am very curious how the detail of mine look.

Iain, not sure - our Guide identified this as a buff-tail. Photos on the web here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chestnut-breasted_Coronet

show a very light chin for the Chestnut, which my bird does not have.
So many types of hummers in S. America, it's hard to tell fine difference sometimes.

Maybe Nate can help.
(Update: Iain is correct - chectnut-breasted.. ID corrected.)

Re loss of detail: THis may be from a new NR program that seems aggressive - let me try again and will re-post later on.

Ok, here is a quick re-edit with NR applied only to BG, then a touc h to the bird itself.
Better - thanks!

I like the moment you captured a lot Sandy....good position of the hummer. I looked at the repost and it seemed to help a little, but still looks pretty soft towards the bottom near the lower middle and feet. I do see motion blur in the wings, wondering if we are just seeing more motion blur on the feet and lower body?? (because the head seems sharper.)

Incredible backround and the repost looks great. NR software is a touchy thing I am finding as well. Everyone says don't apply it to a bird, but sometimes that's where it's needed.
