Happy New Year to everyone. Spent a quiet morning at the river hoping for some magic in the skies that never materialized.I was lying on the ice trying to set this shot up. I think I need one of those flip-up do-dads.

I'm thinking the mountain is too far away and that I should have zoomed in a bit.Comments?

Dean - Very cool ice formations. A zoom might have worked inthis situation to bring the mnt "closer". Processing looks fine, the distant large stand of trees seems to interrupt the flow of the comp by blocking up that area. If possible, I ight have tried to position the peaks between the stands of trees, then look for more interesting ice for the FG. I t appears you looked for the FG first, then the mnts? Still, a very pleasing view and sky. :toast:

Interesting perspective. The image sets a winter mood very well. Nice subtle color in the sky.

Lovely ice formations. The distance for the mountains looks fine to me; not too far away IMO. I might try some additional post processing on the sky to see if I could bring out any more color there.

Good fg and decent bg, but there is so much fairly uninteresting ice in the bg that it fails to carry the image. Verticals in situations like this can be tough to compose well.

Dean,

I like your near/far composition and clearly the ice formations are the central subject simply because that's what you're telling the viewer. The mountains and sky are more of a background accent element - at least for me. I like it when it's obvious how the photographer crafts an image telling the viewer what they want to them to look at. Hope that makes sense.

I am with Doug though a little bit on this. The patterns and texture of the foreground ice are wonderful, but once you get half way up the details are lost and there isn't much to connect the foreground with the background. A minor point for sure, but the middle part loses a little interest. Maybe not just a zoom, but rather than laying on the ice you could get more detail out of the more distant ice from a high vantage point and a longer focal length. But then that's all just speculation since I wasn't there.

All in all, this works very well showcasing the fascinating patterns in the ice and this is well captured.

The foreground is almost it's own picture. The consistency of light and tonal value makes this very easy to view and enjoy.

Thanks for all the comments.Harry, you nailed it, I was looking for some nice ice knowing the mountains would be in the BG, rookie mistake. Bill, the colours were very subdued and I didn't want to go overboard with the "enhancements". Lon, I see what you and Doug are saying about the MG connection. Thanks Tony, I don't mention it but I definitely use your light masks! :toast:

I really like the FG ice. You caught the lightweight, "lace" feel of the ice really well, and perfect exposure. The BG is pretty but as was noted, it's not as strong as the FG.
( I had to go to your website to see where this might be.....no snow on the mountains? )

Hi Genny, thanks for the comment. Not sure if you're joking about the snow on the mountains as we have about a 200cm(6ft) base at most of the local ski hills. I guess that's not much where you are.
