Red-tailed Hawk

Buteo jamaicensis

Fairly strong sidelighting on this one. I would have preferred a bit more detail in the shadows but overall I really liked the image for the pose and nice light on the majority of the hawk.

Shot handheld leaning lens against my vehicle.

I cloned out one very small branch from upper left corner.

7D, 500mm f4L IS + 1.4 tc
1/640, f5.6, ISO 200
71% of full frame

All comments and critique very appreciated.
Thank You.

I love the monotone colors here and the pose. Light is fine IMO.

Matt: This is VERY nice. The overall monochrome nature of this image works for me. Plenty of light to make the hawk pop. I really like the pose and the head turn is super. Larger version really shines on this one.

Great image, like everyone else has said the monochrome nature of the colors really enhances the image. I really like that one drop of red on the end of his beak, very telling! Nice pose and detail.

Matt,

Super image with great light on the subject. As Rich noted the hawk just ate.

I guess I'm with everyone else. I like the warmth of the light and the brown tones enhance that even more. Nice pose with that bloody beak adding an extra punch of color. Well framed too.

Love the small amount of blood - great detail there. Can you give him some more room on the right?

Hi Matt. As others have mentioned nice monochromatic colors. I can't get close to these guys out here, 50 yards seems to be about it, so I'm envious of your accomplishment here. Everyone who has commented likes the sharpness and I agree it is good. However, I feel that you might be able to sharpen this a little more and make it even more impressive. My vision isn't what it used to be, so take it with a grain of salt.

Beautiful light and warm tones Matt. Love the pose. Shadows look fine to me, I can see detail in them and light causes shadows :-)

A shot much above average : the light and pose are very nice, but even more the bloody beak and background colors similar to those of the bird .
