King Penguin Portrait II

by Jim DeWitt

Gallery: AvianPosted January 16, 2011178 views15 comments
Olympus E-3, 300mm, laying on ground
f7.1, 1/200, ISO400

Another King portrait, trying to capture the detail in the neck and head coloration. Taken at St. Andrews Bay, South Georgia Isand, in fairly gloomy light. It started to drizzle not long after this shot.

Full frame, slight brightening, usual sharpening drill.

C & C, please. Thanks for looking.

Jim: Striking image. One doesn't often look for the abstract in Avian photography in my experience. This transcends genre IMO. Fantastic comp, vision and result. >=))>

Love all the different feather patterns and textures in this King Jim. Exposure looks good. the eye and bill look just a bit softer than the areas just down the neck and on the breast. I might try a bit more sharpening on the face if this were mine. A very cool take on this subject overall.

Striking colors and very interesting comp. Perhaps another round of sharpening on the face and beak to match the detail on the breast, as Ron noted.

Jim,

Great angle on the shot which adds interest. The detail on the feathers is awesome.

Great shot.

The colors and textures are amazing. I think your comp is great. Initially I thought the whole beak should be there but it would draw the eye away from the textures and somewhat more subtle colors. This must have been the best trip ever.

Intriguing image, Jim. Apart from a little sharper eye I like it as is, but while playing with it and cutting off the top half I noticed you'd be left with a great abstract. I'm not saying to do that, but just that the colors and flowing lines are remarkable.

Unconventional and very appealing composition . The whole effect is really nice : a pure pattern of colors and lines .

Love the patterns, details, colors and the view of the eye. Different, but I like it.
