Maturing Canadian Goose

Shot while out for a walk around a lake in the city where I live back in June. This young goose stood out from all the older geese in the park, so I grabbed a quick shot before it hit the water.
Sharpening was done on this photo, no cropping.

Canon Rebel XS
EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L @ 260mm
f/9.0
1/400 sec

All comments and advice on how to make my photos better is why I am posting, so please feel free to offer advice and wisdom.

Tony- Did you post the right photo? This is a lovely shot, but it's not a Canada Goose.

Hi Tony, you've got an American Wigeon there, rather than a Canada Goose. You have very nice detail in the bird and the exposure looks great generally, but for me the very dark, difficult to see eye detracts from the overall image--maybe a selective brightness adjustment would help? In terms of composition, I'd prefer the bird a little higher in the frame, and might crop a bit of the water off the top/left. Welcome to NPN--I'll look forward to more of your work!

Thanks for the correction, right bird wrong title!! To busy with my youngest and not enough attention to what I was doing.

Thanks for the welcome Brian and the suggestion on the brightness adjustment.

Nice job, Tony. Good exposure and detail. It is too bad the eye wasn't in the light. :toast:

Hi Tony - Nice duck and good pose. Needs, imo, imo, more room on the bottom and less on top.
A levels adjustment of the eye would define it more - and many (including me!) would clean up the widgeon poop!
The bright area on the head is a hindrance, but could be easily adjusted with whatever editing program you use.
Welcome! Glad yu're with us!

Welcome, Tony. I agree with Brian's assessment of this image. I don't mind the overall comp, but would see if I could bring a bit more detail out around the eye. Well done on the bright white areas.

Hi Tony, Welcome to NPN's avian critique gallery, you'll learn a lot here if you are serious about your photography. I'd like to see more light in the area of the duck's eye, it seems a bit dark there. I'd also add some canvas back to the bottom if you have it in the original frame, it seems a touch tight there. Nice sharpness and detail.

I like the colors, the soft light, and the great plumage detail. Nits already mentioned. :toast:
