Lesser Goldfinch

Another from last February at Cave Creek, Arizona. There were plenty of these around, but I had trouble getting an image I liked.Going back through the files, I found this one that I must have missed. The light in the eye doesn't jump out, but I like the way it appears, particularly in the larger image.

7D, 500mm f4 + 1.4TC, black widow on Gitzo legs, f8.0, 1/125, iso 250, Av mode with -1/3 compensation, cropped to 9.2 MP from 18MP original. Normal processing in CS4.

I always appreciate your comments and criticisms.

Thanks for looking,

Yes, I guess you DID miss this one! It's a beauty! Nice detail, good pose, great colors and a simple, clean image. He might have chosen a more interesting perch for you, but the red colorand diagonal is a big plus.
Everything works very well here, for me.

Good one Dennis. I like the low key feel, not what I would have imagined for sunny Arizona though. Sharp and well detailed.

Very pleasing shot Dennis, I particularly like the color palette, the yellows of the bird stand out nicely against the subdued BG and the reddish perch pick up the slight reddish cast on the beak. Excellent detail and while the eye doesn't pop out there is good separation from the blacks on the head and a nice catch light - thanks for digging through your files - excellent photo.

An excellent image of this goldfinch Dennis. Nice sharpness and detail and the simple comps puts all the emph on the bird. I like the perch and the BG. As most others have stated, the eye is great as is.

Dennis,

I like the light you caught in the bird's eye, it is subtle but obviously there and goes well with the lighting situation you had. Nice pose, details and comp. I like low key images like this.

I agree Dennis - I like the gleam in the eye in the larger image; great detail also. Having never seen the species I'm not sure, but I was wondering whether it's a little dark and there was room to bring down the mid tones a little???

cheers

Awesome look at this goldfinch Dennis. Really nice detail. I like that pose showing off it's plumage with a nice head turn to see the eye. I think the light on the eye looks good. Great image.
