Light Speed

My first post here (Pacific Triangle)a while back was of a long lens shot down that Kiwanda Sea tunnel with the wave breaking in the center of the image. Here is another image taken on the Oregon coast from the same trip  The sunrise was behind me. This was my first attempt at working with the receding ocean waves.

I attached a larger presentation as well.

All comments welcome!

James, the way you captured the flow is very interesting, there is a lot of dynamic in your picture!

The receding waves simply draws us into the frame, leading to those rocks. Very dynamic. Neatly composed image, James.

This is really cool James. The larger version really makes me feel like I'm moving towards the rocks/sea. I like the colors and comp. No nits from me.

I have a soft spot for these type of images (probably 'cause I live so far away), and this is one of the better ones. Works from fore to aft...no suggestions from me!

This is beautiful! The lines fill the foreground so well and the soft sunrise colors are lovely.

Love the lines! Very cool image.

I don't see any info on focal length, f/stop and shutter... ?

The only thing I wish was going on would be a color dominant other than yellow...

Lovely! Very nicely composed in every aspect. Only one very minor nit would be that the inclusion of the rock formation on the left does result in a slight imbalance compositionally.

I really like the comp and motion of the water as well as the reflected light. Since the lines all lead to the BG rock formation I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more detail there as well as a bit sharper. :toast:

Thanks for the great comments everyone!

Mark, sorry I forgot to list the details of this image; At the time I was a "Sony Guy", using a a700 small frame camera, this image was taken with a 10-20mm lens @ 10mm/1sec/f22/ISO100. I have to say, that the a700 held up well, because later on that trip, I got hit with an "over head" wave up in Olympic NP!! And the camera continued to work for 1 year!! I am now moving to Nikon (D3s) which is on the way

As for color, the raw file only contained the range of yellow/orange I had to work with.

As for for detail on the distant sea stacks, they were in the shadows still from the rising sun behind me. I did what I could to bring out as much detail from a single image. I am in the process of learning of to blend images in photoshop, so in the future, I could improve an image like this one, I sharpened as best I could without getting to much "halo" on the sea stacks.

I realize the small sea stack on the left does make the image a bit uneven, but the cresting waves on the far right in the distance help a bit to offset that issue.

Awesome! I really like to scroll this up and down fast and watch it alternately recede and burst out of my screen. Very nicely done.

You don't get better leading lines than this. Beautifully composed and balanced, and I like that the colors aren't too in-your-face.

I've been working with waves and slow exposures, but I haven't been able to make an image like this. Immediately loved it! The flow lines and exposure looks absolutelly perfect.

James,

Classic seaside motion image and crafted wonderfully. The low angle perspective is key in making this a success. No nits or suggestions from me.

Hi Rodrigo! Thanks for the nice comment! How about I come down to Chile and work on it together

I have always wanted to get down there to see the coastline and the Andes !!

Talk about leading lines. Those are killer, James. I would be curious to see how this look as a B&W.

Hi James,
Again, congratulations on the great result of this slow exposure coastal picture.
Being taken in the Pacific Ocean, this kind of light only happens really early in the morning and guess it took a little while to find out the exposure time that will leave these water trails at that early hour. Great work.

As for Chile, there are many places to wonder about, from the coast of the Pacific Ocean, to the heights of the Andes, down to glaciers down south and the driest desert in the world up north. Just let me know
As for BC, I loved it! I visited Vancouver and north up to Williams Lake a few years ago in the fall. Also incredible country and wonderful to visit. Also visited Oregon two times, last time on 2007, but went flyfishing to the Deschutes area.
Cheers- :toast:

Rodrigo, thanks for the information :) I am planning a trip down there maybe in 2012 to South America and Antarctic  Glad you have been up to where I live, BC is quite nice, as is all of the Pacific Northwest.

Mat, I tried the conversion to B&W, it is interesting, I may post it tomorrow  I do like the color version better.

Thanks again to everyone for their comments :wavey:
