Deer

This photo was taken last August in Waterton Lakes NP. This deer surprised us while we were eating something near Cameron Lake, suddenly she appeared between the bushes. I’m not sure if the composition works, perhaps she is situated too much on the left. It’s a full frame shot so I can’t move her but I have other shots more centered. I like the colors of de BG.

Canon 1D Mk3
300mm f2.8
f 4.5
1/60
ISO 100

Feedback and comments always welcomed and greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Hi Oscar, great shot, very sharp and a beautiful moment. I do think the frame is a bit tight on the left, maybe a more centered one would work better if the deer's gaze is as good as in this shot.... :toast:

Nice detailed closeup Oscar, I agree with Ingrid's comments. It especially looks a little tight on the left when I view the larger image. Still a nice shot though. :toast:

Background is indeed well done and the exposure looks just right. Your choice of f4.5 gave enough dof to get those foreground leaves and her head and shoulders nicely in focus. Regarding framing, I admit that my very first thought on opening was that the ear felt too close to the left side. Still, a good post.

HI Oscar,

I like the image and am in agreement with the comments of most of the others (so feel it is sightly too close to the left side of the frame). If you use Photoshop CS4 or CS5 it would be a simple matter (and take only about 30 seconds) to "slide" the deer slightly to the right using Content Aware Scaling. There is a limit to how far you could move it without causing some artifacts, but that limit is far beyond what you need to do here. Now, whether or not you feel right about making such a change (using Photoshop) is a totally different question!

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...
