Flyway Through The Pass
by Wayne Jones
I think this is my first post in this Gallery. It is not as imaginative as most of the images posted here. It is in fact an attempt to produce a realistic-looking image, but one that did not exist in nature. This is a section of a long multi-frame panorama, (looking south toward Indian Pass in the Adirondack High Peaks Wilderness, hence the title) but it's a combination of two versions that were shot five hours apart. When I shot the first version, there were geese in the photo, which added more life to the scene. However, the overcast sky was totally gray. Later that day I started seeing colors in the clouds from the setting sun, so I raced back to the scene of the earlier panorama and re-shot it. The more colorful version contained no birds, but later (using a layer with the blending mode set to color) I added the sky color from the later shoot to the image with the geese.

The grey mountain range is nicely sandwiched between the colors in the sky and the vegetation in the fg. I think adding birds to the sky makes a big difference to fill the rather empty top half of the image.
