Icarus' Flight

Nikon D90, Sigma 150-500 at 500mm, Orbetello Lagoon, Tuscany, Italy.

The restless flight of this Common Tern inspired me to this abstract.
C&C welcome!

Maurizio,

Interesting shot! You managed to do a nice job avoiding flare while capturiung nice colors. The tail of the tern looks very long in the photo. If I did not know it was a bird I would have thought a UFO.

Maurizio,

Love the colors and wispy clouds but for me this does not work because the tern isn't really identifiable. If the tern had been sharp this probably would have held more appeal for me.

Nice colors. Beautifully captured sunset. Not sure the bird helps the image.

I thought it was a Tropicbird the tail looks so long here. It works well for me as posted, very artistic. My only nit would be I would like a little more space at the top so the top of the sun isn't hitting the edge of the frame. Welcome to NPN, I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work. :toast:

The colors and the sunset are great. The bird is ok, but it does not really add to the comp. for me.

Hey, thanks to everyone for the friendly words!

Mia: you are right, the bird isn't really identifiable as I purposedly focused on the sun. Actually, I think I should have tried your suggestion, too. It didn't occurred me at the moment, surely next time will.

Sally and Richard: I have other shots of the sunset without the bird. Though they look nice, to my eye this picture is the "different" one as it reminded me of the legend of the melted wing of Icarus. Removing the bird imho unbalances the composition of the frame. Anyway, thank you for your opinion, I appreciate the differences.

Rick and Nate about the tail: I think the cloud behind the bird is making its best to prolong the real one (it tricked me, too).

Nate: I agree with the composition fault. Should the sun have been lower in the frame, the picture would have worked much better. Thank you!
