Bramblingin a bush

Brambling (male)
Been working on these for a couple of weeks now and they are nearly all in a lichen covered hawthorn bush 40 feet from the bedroom window.
I was getting a bit fed up with the birds all being surrounded by twigs, but then I thought - So what- thats how we see them. I have been doing birds on a stick for years and am beginning to re think things a little. Not a big subject size as I am limited by gear and have to rely on cropping.
D200 Sigma 50-500mm
125th @f7.1 640 ISO
Quite a large crop. Levels

Looks fine to me John :toast:

Subject looks a good size in frame without being to over powering.

I too have decided to photograph birds in real world situations when ever possible.

Nah, too natural, it'll never catch on you know
A great image John.
I've only managed to photograph one and it wouldn't get off the blooming ground, so well done.

Thanks people. Its raised some interesting ideas in my mind. I,ve been looking at some old bird onstick jobs,(about 15,000) and all of a sudden I think they look awful-- seeming to conform to "photo" rules as opposed to natures rules. But maybe I was going for votes which I realise was the wrong way around. This is the problem with "nature photo forums "
The other point is that Bramblings can be "pigs " at perching (or some can ! ) They tend to hover in cover then come down quick, which is why I ended up with the bush approach.
Interesting anyway.
Thanks

I really like these John, and I can't remember ever seeing one!

As somebody who is pretty new to wildlife photography, I don't understand why it's a problem for some that an animal is pictured in its environment, so for me these are great.

That doesn't mean I don't like the 'bird on a stick' type stuff, but as you say, there do seem to be trends and flavours for certain types of shot and hats off to anybody doing something different!

I still like a good boas image but I also love a good habitat image when its done correctly and doesn t look to messy and I think think these are good habitat images especially the second one you have done a good job here John
