Geysers del Tatio, Chile

The idea of this picture was to capture one of the intense steam flows at the Tatio Geotermal Field, and still combine this image with the frigid temperature (-10°C / 14°F) at this early time of the day. Finally this was one of the first shots I made that day, just before sunrise.

This geyser field is located in the high mountains of Northern Chile (more than 4000 meters/13800 feet above sea level), not too far from the Bolivian border. The best time to visit and admire the steam flows is at first light in the morning. Such was this case, making this shot at 5:53AM.

Data: F16, 1/8sec, ISO 200, 18mm.

Like the way the 2 smaller vents add depth behind the bigger geyser Rodrigo.

Rodrigo,

Great shot! It almost has alunar appearance to it. The scene is a classic action shot of a desolate location.

Love the blue tones throughout and your composition is excellent. A bleak looking landscape, almost other-worldly, that really comes across with your early morning image. Outstanding work.

Lunar appearance is indeed a correct description! I love the mood and even the bright spot in the BG fits in this image. Somehow I do wish the entire steam flow would be included in the frame; perhapas less FG and more room on top. :toast:

Very impressive capture. I was thinking I would be alone in my feeling this had a lunar feel to it.

I seriously cannot believe this only has 6 comments so far. This is so unique for a geyser image, not to mention skillfully and beautifully captured. It's moody, well balanced, and evokes a strong sense of the place. Great work.

Love the cold blue presentation here Rodrigo. The atmosphere created by all the mist is sweet too. Very well done. Cheers

Thank you all for such nice comments. I was a bit worried about leaving it "too blue", but I still wanted to somehow show the really cold conditions at that early hour of the day. Thanks a lot!
