Nighthawk Chick

This image was taken several years ago on slide film. We were hiking a trail in the Black Hills of South Dakota. As we hiked, a bird flew from the trail in front of us. The bird was a Common Nighthawk. As we got to the place where the the bird flew from we almost stepped on the chick because it blended so well with the trail that we almost did not see it. It is always interesting to see a bird that lays it's eggs on the bare ground. We shot a couple of image a left quickly so to put as little stress on the mother as possible. No techs saved. Thanks for your comments.

The pine cone really adds scale. The focus is a little off. It's great to see the chick, the egg, and the surrounding habitat all together. Makes a much more complete story. Nice capture

Something I have never seen, I enjoy the view of the chick and the unhatched egg. :toast:

Richard,

Once I clicked into the photo I was surprised. This is a neat photo that works well. The pinecone adds scale and gives the shot a more complete appearance. Nice work! :jump:
