Haystack Morning

Gallery: LandscapePosted February 16, 2011416 views21 comments
Pre-dawn light at Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach, Oregon, January 2011.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the composition here. I decided to go with the 50/50 split and included both the moon and the reflection. I'm still undecided on this one so please give me your honest opinions/suggestions.

Nikon D7000, 12-24 Nikkor Dx
30 sec at f/16, ISO 100

Thanks for taking a look. Larger version provided.

Beautiful! Although I like as is, would love to see as a b&w

Looks good, Scott. The foreground textures are very appealing, but so are the moon and rock focal points. I really like how my eyes move through this image.

A very moody photograph with the foggy atmosphere. I think it works as it is. Great idea to include the moon. I especially like the swirls in the lower third of the image.

I like it as is Scott. Nice lead in lines and very ethereal.

Your 50/50 split works just fine here because of the foreground interest and of course the moon. I like the simple color palette, and the way the slow shutter of the water matches the cloud. You end up with a sort of Yin Yang effect -- some simple dark clouds against a bright sky, and some simple light color water streaks against a dark foreground. The mist in the air provides a nice atmospheric effect, and adds depth to the composition. I get the feeling that I would like to see a hair more room above the moon, but that might be without reason. The existing placement of the moon gives a dynamic composition. Nice work!!

That's pretty badass. Looks like you played with the liquify filter on the fg. Trippy

Classic misty conditions, just beautiful. I love the foreground squiggles of water. I don't like the moon so much, I think it distracts here.

That's a lovely image Scott the 50:50 split is just fine but there is a potential for a crop from the top to offset 50:50 because I'm in agreement with Floris the moon in the sky is actually not great but the reflection of it in the sand is great.

The moody atmosphere goes very well with the smooth water action in the foreground. Beautiful!

Beautiful, mystical scene. I like everything about it . . . like Floris I could see this working well without the moon, but I don't feel that it detracts.

Excellent composition. The blue dominant is probably one of the main subjects, other than the iconic Cannon Beach rocks. I think the horizon in the middle didn't harm the overall idea.

I'm in partial agreement with Floris. For some reason, only the reflected moon bugs me... but not the real thing. The colors and texture of the beach are really appealing. Overall a lovely shot.

Very, very nice! I love the square format and the 50/50 split works well for me. The streaks in the foreground seal the deal! :toast:

I really like the light, color, and comp. I also like how the lines of foam in the surf mimic the clouds. Superb shot.

Very fine all round. All works by my reckoning. Good timing with the frg returning water swirls. I imagine that a few (dozen) exposures might have been made here to catch the best of them?
