Hanging Winter

Thanks for all the kind remarks on my last post!
Ill change gears a bit for this post, this is also from my trip out to Rifle last week. Hanging Lakes is an iconic spot just off I-70, a short but steep hike that sees lots of traffic in the summer, and even in Winter there was a well-packed path to the falls. There's a million shots of the falls in summer floating around, but probably not too many intimates of the falls in Winter. A cool little spot!

This is very nice, Stan. I was looking for something like this the last few days on and near Lake Superior, but it never happened :frown:. I like this comp and the turquoise/blue color is wonderful. The water splashes and reflection adds so much for this. Like it alot!

A cool little spot indeed. You have it all going in this capture. Light, Texture, lines, they all work perfectly together. The WB and colour saturation is perfect too.The freezing of the melting ice and it's splashes is what puts it over the top for me. I could see a crop from the right side, some of those lines leading off frame kind of spoil the rest of the great vertical lines you have. Awesome again. Cheers

Stan, I agree with Raymond's point about a crop from the right. All those verticals really make the image and the right part is a bit of a distraction. Other than that, just a great image.

Beautiful capture Stan..... Does remind me of the icicles hanging off my roof right now ...... Gorgeous and amazing especially the shimmering water. What is the scale?

Stan, like the B&W on RMNP, I enjoy this. I like the icey blues and blacks. Range of white to black is covered. Tend to agree with the right crop, and maybe consider losing the stick and white spot on the left below the nice splash line.

The right side and what is off-frame looks like it would be interesting for an image also.

Wow, very cool image. I like the right edge included, personally. My only suggestion is to either eliminate the far left edge to get rid of the stick in the water, or just get rid of the stick in the water.

Thanks! I would like to get a tigher crop, but unfortunatley this is already cropped a bit and i hate cropping too much more--but c'est la vie!
Eva--scale is about 15 feet high here. I mentioned in RMNP it would probably be super cool to wade out into that water (its probably 3-4 feet deep im guessing) and take some shots from within the ice--course you'd need a dry suit!

Lovely and graceful. This is almost exactly what I wanted to see with your Hanging Lakes images at RMNP. You musta read my mind!
I agree with the others on a slight right crop and 'losing' the stick.

This is striking Stan! I do feel like the larger chunk of ice on the extreme right side throws off the flow of the sharp repeating lines throughout the rest of the image. My vote would be to crop that out and go for a 3:2 aspect ratio.

Oh, just read that others are suggesting the same thing. You might need to bring the dry suit next time and see what you can find from up close.

The layered ice makes for a really cool shot. I don't care so much for the right side of the image, but I do prefer the uniform ice formations in the rest of the image. Very good eye!

nice tones stan. i could lose the distraction to the right (although it somewhat adds tension). the splashes add much.

Wow, gorgeous!
Great glacier-like blues, and the dripping water and reflections are excellent.

Stan, this shot is pretty cool, I like the verticals together with the horizontals at the bottom.

Oh, yeah, this is really cool, Stan. I think I'd take the stick out along the left edge. Great 3D look and touch of my favorite "glacial blue" in the ice. Also like the splash line. Really good one.

Stan, this image sure brings back memories. Very nice photo, I like that you have some action in the water. I did the hike in winter in 1971, got some half way decent medium format slides, but never went back in the winter. Thanks for sharing.

Great color and lines in this one. I do agree about the crop of the right side and lose the stick. This is such a beautiful place in summer, and now it looks like it's the same thing in winter.

Nice shot Stan. I love the upper section, but tthe water takes away from the scene to me. The upper part would make a great abstract on its own.

Like this one Stan much more to my taste. I concur with a crop on the right side to match the thickness of the line of white icicle on the left side of the frame. Like the shutter speed with the fast recorded drips too.

Very nice composition. The cyan range is appealingly subtle and gorgeously echoed in the reflection. All together different from your last post, but equally beautiful. :toast:

I was hoping you'd get a comp of this! It's such a cool scene. I'd be tempted to crop a bit off the right, as it's just a little distracting to my eye. Nonetheless, it still works well for me :toast:

Stan,

Fabulous icicle image! Nothing to really nitpick here which means I think this is great as presented. But "optionally," do you have any that include more of the abstract reflections? And, I think you have the latitude here to bring out that turquoise blue even more. Of course a personal processing direction to take...

Great diversity from your recent travels. Thanks for sharing it all.

Hey, I thought you were a strict rule of thirds guy! Well, I understand the departure here, and it works real nice. It's amazing the amount of melting going on, or is that still flow from the lake? Nice abstract going on in the foreground ripples too.

Fantastic shot Stan. The lines in the ice are wonderful. A minor thing for me is the ice on the right side of the image breaks up the flow just a hair. Excellent Image!

Wow that is wild! I love how many layers of icicles there are. I could spend hours shooting something like that! I wonder, did you try any longer exposures to smooth out the water?

A unique view of these falls for sure Stan. I'd like this better with a little bit of the right side cropped off. Love the curtain effect.
