Snow dusting

Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted February 21, 2011167 views7 comments
This was taken after we had a very brief dusting of fluffy snow. It was extremely difficult to get since I had to keep moving my tripod back and forth (to focus) in our previous 18 inches of snow! This is when I wished I had a focusing rail. After many frustrating shots I got one where, after cropping, most snow crystals were clear.

90mm macro lens with 34mm of extension tubes. F/11 at 1/2 sec.
ISO 100.

Carolyn, this one beautiful photograph. Job well done. I have been waiting for spring to get out the macro lens, but after seeing this I will have it this weekend.

The clarity of the crystals is outstanding. I hadn't thought about adding extension tubes to a macro lens to get beyond 1:1, but I'm going to try it having seen this image.

I like the image but the lower portion seems a bit OFF. I would probably have tried multiple shots to get the entire image in focus.

The crystal structure looks so solid and 3 dimensional, FANTASTIC! I think that the bud under the branch adds atmosphere and environment to the photo. I like the fact that it is out of focus, the white highlight at the bottom of the bud provides a great compositional balance, which it would not have done if it was in focus.

Keep up the good work!

Love your flakes. Thank you for your compliment. It never is the same two days in a row shooting these tiny fellows. Adorama offers a nice rail and is reasonable in cost. I have using mine for years. Good luck in the seasons to come. larry
