Yesterday the City of Henderson was doing something with our water so I took a holiday from the apartment and boxes and went driving through Lake Mead Recreation area to see what I could find.

The southern end of Northshore road was just beginning to show clumps of what I think are Desert Sunflowers. If anyone can positively ID these flowers, I would appreciate it.

It was cold and windy and bright, especially at mid-day when this was taken.

D700, 500D diopter, handhand, -2EV, F/4, ISO 100, 1/5000s.

Processing done with ACR, and Viveza 2. Image cropped to 4x5 vertical format.

I do need to go back and capture the green leaves of the clump to aid in the ID of this desert flower.

Other suggestions most welcome.

Love the way you have handled the yellow here. The comp is fantastic, and the like the placement of the still opening buds, vanishing away in the oof ...Well Done

Carol: Nice find and a solid capture. I think I might crop this from the top down to just above the first flower. The BG up there bugs me a little. >=))>

Very nice Carol. I think a square crop would work nicely with this to.

Can't help with plant Id but I do like the POV and DOF. I might be tempted to go for a square crop. There is a nice diagonal with the bloom and buds. Also might add a vignette. Just suggestioning some alternatives for possible consideration.

strictly from an ID stand point, leaves are a big help but I think you're on the right track there. The composition in this image is stellar and the colors are lovely. I think you did very well in the harsher light of midday.

Very nice job handling the brighter light here. I also like the comp and the dof and pof work really well, too. I think a crop does put a little more emphasis on the flowers.

Thank you all for your feedback.

This morning I went back to the drawing board, adding some control points to the upper left so handle the buggy portion of the corner, and cropped to a square format.

I left the bottom mottled portion intact so that when the image is reviewed from a distance, it does look as though Genesis is rising from the ashes

Thanks for the ideas.

Sorry Carol, I can't help with the ID.

I think I ended up the same place as Bill. I like the notion of a crop to about the upper 2/3 of the small flower that's in semifocus behind the main subject. otherwise I end up wandering around in the upper part of the image looking at things. And if that's what you wanted me to do that's fine too.

Glad you're getting recovered from the move.

I definitely prefer the second version. Love the way the flowers blur as they recede down the stalk.

Carol,

The repost is a much stronger image for my tastes and I like it very much.
