Hello... I've been a long time fan of NPN and just recently became a member. I'm looking forward to participating in the forums and learning & sharing with everyone from this great site.

I captured this image a number of years back here in northern Utah... thanks for taking a look, and I appreciate your comments.

Canon 20D w/ 400 5.6L
1/1000 f/5.6 iso200
vertical capture

Thanks,
John

Welcome to NPN John! I really like the directional light here and the fact that even with the brighter parts of the heron facing the sun the light's are under control on both bird and fish. The heron is sharp, the fish is sharp enough and the open mouth of the fish adds to the drama. Well done and hope to see you in a few hours.

Hi John!

So good to see you posting here!

I love the setting you have presented, snowy foreground, the ice and open water further back. It's also a great pose and the fish in the bill of the heron adds a lot of interest. Lovely light and natural colors. It is a small thing but a little more dof would have also gotten the face of the fish a bit sharper. The blowing ociptal plume is very nice too. Exposure looks great.

We'll see you a little later today :wavey:

Welcome John. Nice start. I like the captured behavior and on the large image you can even see the GBH's tongue. The almost centered bird works for me because it brings a focus to the head and fish.

Hi John: Welcome!! Glad to have you here. I'm sure we will enjoy your images. The light on this image is really nice. You held the detail in the brighter areas and still have nice details in the shadows. Gotta love the look on the face of the fish.... Ooooohhhhhh...... Nice image. :toast:

Welcome John.. A nice capture..I like the looks of the heron and the poor fish.. If this is a FF image, I would do a square crop focusing on the eyes of heron and the fish...(to add more drama)
Even this frame works perfect...

That's quite the open mouth on the fish. The light is excellent and you've used it well to bring out texture.

Well done.
