Sedona Red

by Doug Koepsel

Gallery: LandscapePosted February 28, 2011719 views37 comments
A quick snow storm Saturday night left a blanket of white upon Sedona. The afternoon was spent at these reflection pools overlooking Cathedral Rock. By evening light, most of the snow had melted though.

Single exposure, Nikon D90, Nikon 16-35 @ 22mm, f/8, 1/15sec, ISO 200.

As always, open to critique and suggestions. Larger image provided.

Wonderful shot, Doug. The mountain range with the light hitting it is great and the reflection makes it even better.

Beautiful shot Doug. I would almost consider a tighter comp to take off a bit from the right and draw more attention to that beautiful light and reflection.

This sure is a beauty Doug. The light is wonderful and exposure looks perfect. You might try Koveh's suggestion for a tighter comp but I'm not sure that would make any better than it already is.

Happy to see the clouds hung around for you at sunset. Definitely my favorite of the images you've shown from this shoot. Beautiful!

Here is a square crop that reduces some of the sides. Thanks for the feedback.

Beautiful contrasting colors. The snow really adds to this image. This is a great example of when breaking those photographic composition rules works (horizon in the middle, subject centered).

Love the blue on red and reflection here! :toast:

Maybe I wish the water was more still, but actually love it as is.

This is a beautiful scene, Doug. The light and reflection are wonderful. The snow looks great and really adds a nice touch to this scene. The crop version looks really nice too, both good. I like the first one the best. Very nice, Doug.

Doug, this is sweet! Great light, great subject, great clouds. The snow is what really makes this special. My only suggestion is to crop a bit from the bottom. The length of the pool sort of tries to pull my eye out of the bottom of the image and I think a bit of a crop would help keep the eye focused on the beautiful peaks. You've got a real winner here!

This is a wonderful, striking image. Definitely among the best of this location that I can recall seeing. I prefer the original comp to the square crop, though the square crop is quite nice as well. Wonderful composition and color!

Really nice image Doug, nice to see Cathedral Rock from somewhere besides red rock crossing. I think I prefer the square crop slightly, it just highlights the glowing rocks and reflection a bit more - great stuff!

What a glow! I second a bit of a tighter crop, at least on the right. Bet it was great to be out there.

Great composition and lighting. What a wonderful way to spend a day. I can't decide which version I like best. The first one gives a feeling of space while the second one emphasizes the rocks and reflections.

Stunning scene Doug! The color combinations are fantastic and the light sublime. An even lower perspective and you may have been able to pick up more reflection?

Doug,

What a gorgeous landscape! The clarity is almost too good to be true, but this really sparkles. I can't decide if the warm light is too saturated on the rock towers or not, but certainly borders on it. But still, I'm in awe of the clarity. Great sky, clouds and the foreground reflection is awesome too. Just a beautiful capture.

oh, btw, I like both versions equally well. The sq format fills more of the frame and I like that. Both are gorgeous landscapes.

Thank you for your kind comments.
Mark- the breeze gaves fits with the slight ripples all afternoon. This was about as smooth as it got so the wind's timing was good.
Erik- thanks for the comment about the pool length in the square crop. I agree. A 5x7 ratio should work well.
Floris- I could not go much lower as the right side of the reflection would catch the edge of the pool, so I kept some separation. But yes, I probably should have dropped a couple of inches lower and to my left some.

Doug, you're making me regret moving away from Sedona, even when work required it. This is a great location (that I used to go trail running along...); it's great to see it with pools and that light.

I'd probably go with a 5x4 aspect ratio, cropping a little of the right side off the original, myself.

Excellent, excellent work.

This is gorgeous! I'm glad you took it from up mthere, instead of the more predictable river shot. Is that a prickly pear in the foreground?

Without snow nearby to break things up, it might have been nice to move in even closer on the pool and reflection, eliminating some of the surrounding rock. Don't get me wrong though, this is gorgeous, and the light...what can I say?

The fact that water at this place isn't common makes this even better, Doug.
I kinda like the the slight ripple in the water myself. Expertly 'developed', too
No nits from me at all. Hope you hang this one proudly!
