Another photo from our incredible Ecuador trip in May. This bird was attracted by a fruit feeding station in the beautiful cloud rainforest.

Canon 40D, 300mm, 1/40 @ f4, ISO 800, a bit of noise reduction

I apperciate all your comments and suggestions.

What a killer species to come to a feeder. Wish for some fill flash and more room all around.

What an angry looking bird  . A really nice specimen for a feeder  . It's a bit tight for my taste but I bet there were load of branches around. Cool capture of a unique bird.

I love the low light look to this, it gives it that deep forest feeling. What a bird.

What a great looking bird. Great colors. Sharpness on the bird's eye and feather's look great. Wish for a bit more DOF to hold the tip of the beak in focus as well. Do you have any more room around the image??

wonderful subject with a nice pose and really nice detail, Ken. would love to see one of these. I agree about wanting a little more room all around, and perhaps a little more DOF for the bill, but on that count, you were already pretty limited in terms of light and still got almost all the bird very sharp. I'd be happy to have this.

Whoa, this is one intense looking bird. Great detail in the face. I wish the DOF had been more, but 1/40s I'm just impressed with the sharpness that you achieved. Really well done.

Ken,

I love the intense look this bird has, the beautiful colors, eye contact and pose. This feels a bit tight to me and I think that more room all around might make for a strong comp.

Thanks everyone for your encouraging comments about this photo. Several of you have asked about more room for a better comp. Unfortunately this is already very close to full frame, when the bird arrived it was so close to us that I made a couple head shots and then backed as far as I could to keep a clean view of the entire bird.

Hi Ken,

I guess you couldn't really hope for a much more of an exotic species than this! Truly a beautiful bird and an excellent capture full of detail and vivid colour with a wonderfully blurred background to boot, great job :^)

Murphy's Law was definitely in play by the sounds of it; no doubt you had countless sightings that were simply too far away to get a good shot of, then next thing you know a beauty comes flying in and lands all too close - LOL ;^)

Magnificent capture nevertheless and certainly one to be proud of :^)

Cheers!

Ashley

What a colorful and striking bird, I like the feather detail on the larger version and that sounds like a great trip, way to go.
