I was waiting for fog to clear one morning, and found this Red-shouldered Hawk sitting upon a fence scanning the ground for breakfast. ID on them is so easy when they show this nice shoulder patch of red! I liked the nice look back and the pastel bg.

50D, 500mm, Iso 200, F4, 1/250
Beanbag on car window. About an hour after sunrise.
Please see LARGER version.

Really like the demure pose of the hawk Sharon and I think the sidelighting works well. I also enjoy the background. The "hangy down" stuff on the wire (animal hair?), with water droplets, is a plus IMO.

The subtle lighting on this hawk is beautiful, Sharon. That little head turn puts just the right amount of light in the eyes for this pose. Nicely done.

I have to admit, the first thing I looked at was the fresh barbed wire with something (fishing line?) hanging from it. I thought it would be a major distraction, but the more I looked my eyes kept going to that beautiful hawk. It is so crisp and loaded with detail... and the face is so 'alive', it grabs and holds my attention. Love that background too! :toast:

I think this is one of the best poses for a static rapture, you can see the full plumage and you've captured a nice head turn. Lovely early morning light on the bird and the water droplets add extra interest. Graham

Hi Sharon... I really like the pose here with the hawk looking left out of frame. Awesome detail and the hawk looks great against that varied background.

Thanks for the comments everyone! Ron and Jeff...I believe the "hangy stuff" is a kind of moss...it was hanging from the trees everywhere and it was on almost the the whole line of fencing. Sharon

You have some excellent detail in this lovely hawk image. Soft uncluttered background is rare and a plus for this. Great all around.
