Callanish, Isle of Lewis
by Lizzie Shepherd
Another from last October on Lewis. I couldn't stop myself making repeat visits to the amazing stone circle at Callanish - there are so many options for photography, only a few of which I managed to explore.
This one was shortly after sunrise - clouds were banking up so light is perhaps a little watery. The clouds and contrails were busy so I opted for a slow exposure with the Lee Big Stopper. Bit of a challenge to use on a shifted 17mm TSE but I've corrected a bit of vignetting and flare in photoshop.
The key thing at Callanish is to find angles where the stones align nicely - but then you need the elements to play their part too...

13 commentsThats a great shot from a great place. When I visited a couple of years ago at first I was disappointed as I was expecting it to be in some remote corner of Lewis. But once you are there in amongst the stones it is a great place for photography and your shot has done it justice.

It can be really hard to find a composition that makes the best of the stones, light and avoids too much of the surrounding housing - this view is one of the better ones in that respect. What I do like is that you can wander up there any time of day/night and there are no ropes or signs. Went to that wonderful stone dolmen (tomb) at the Burren in Ireland in the summer and it has ropes all around which makes things nearly impossible for us photographers. Of course you have to protect these places and perhaps Callanish enjoys less rigorous controls because it is not in the middle of nowhere.
These locations can be difficult to get the best out of and I think you have done a really good job on this.
Your composition of using the stone in the bottom right corner to point back into the images is very clever and worked a treat. Also really like the sky in this one.
Well done!

Good use of the 10 stopper, it makes it that bit different.
Well done.
Geoff.
Lovely image Lizzie, the sky looks very nice with those superb clouds.

I like the detail on the larger shot...also like the moving clouds. It doesn't come over so well in the smaller size. If ever there was an advert for the TSE17mm IQ.
