A Ray and a Log

I was intrigued by the ray of light that slivered through the canopy. Seemed the gator thought it was perfect sun bathing on a log.

Mind sharing how you got that ray to show up on cue? I could sure use a few of those. Terrific lighting. I must admit to being tempted to crop from the right so that the entire background is black.

I really like this one Wayne, the lighting works perfectly :^) Reminds me of a similar photo I have of a young saltwater croc we came across sunbathing on a log along the Kinabatangan River in Northern Borneo, though the lighting we had wasn't nearly as dramatic as this ;^)

Kind regards,

Ashley

Great lighting, Wayne, and you've made the most of it here. However, if this were mine, I'd crop almost 1/3 of the right side of the image, which is spoiling the composition, in my opinion. :toast:

Hi Wayne,

Well, as the others have pointed out - very sweet light (and well captured). On my monitor I see less detail on the right side of the image of the "standard" image size (the tail is hardly visible unless I look at my monitor from an extreme angle) and I think I prefer that (over what I see in the larger version). Good job on the exposure and the image looks quite sharp. I THINK my preference would be to have the subject a little lower in the frame (but still including the reflection of course) and have a little more room on the top side of the image. I'd keep the aspect ratio the same (but not sure if you have the room on the original for this).

I do have one last comment on the composition, but it's a real "perfect world" thing and I know you could do nothing about this: my absolute preference would be for the image to be almost "reversed", that is, to have the fade-to-black portion on the left side of the image and have the gator looking into it. As is I get a little too strong a feeling that the gator is leaving the frame (as opposed to exiting it). But I totally realize that this is NOT what you were given to work with and you did a great job on making the most of the opportunity...

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Brad

Really nice image,in super light.
I wouldn't crop any from the rhs but I would clone out the light area towards the top right corner.Still a terrific image though Wayne.

Super photo here Wayne, fantastic use of lighting and great quality from the ISO, using the fact that you did not need a fast shutter speed with this guy :) and I assume you were on a tripod or beanbag ? tahnks for posting this one :) cheers Stu

Wonderful use of light and dark to creatively show the gator. I like that you can just make out some of the tail and the soft spot of light in the upper right adds to the image, well done.

Wow, love the moody lighting and rich colors. Perfect for this subject. Everything worked out fine even with the really slow shutter speed; all good with what I assume is a motionless animal. :toast: :toast:

Wayne, the light on this is simply superb! Love the detail and drama of this. One of the better gator images I can remember viewing. Not sure if I would like a tighter crop better. I would have to see them side by side....but if I did crop, would take off right side (getting rid of the lighted area) and also would crop a touch more off the bottom placing him lower in the frame. But those are all personal preferences. Great job on this!
