Adjusted the contrast and juiced the vibrancy up a little. Tried different crops but I when I cut the tops of the tree's off it seem to lack balance.

Actually, I like the comp as is. Overall, this looks very painterly. I only wish it were bigger - it's very hard to discern much at this size.

Todd,

At this small size, it's a bit hard for my old eyes to see the details. This looks to be underexposed by about a full stop, and is overall a bit flat contrast-wise. You might consider raising the exposure threshold and then work abit with the contrast. I like the comp, and it does have a painterly feel.

Just a note on image size: Your image can be 720px on the long side and maximum file size for images hosted by NPN is 300KB (500kb for optional larger file), sRGB JPEG files recommended. The 300/500KB limit does not apply for posts that link to images on other servers.

Here it is a little bigger at 720 px on the long side. The flat lighting was because it was a completely gray/thick fog sky. Hence the "painterly" look. As suggested I increased the exposure by about one stop. Sometimes I never know how much to push the exposure because I want to retain the dark and gray mood of the day. Like your quote says Bill I tried to make lemonade out of lemons that mother nature gave me for that day. This was taken at Middle Creek Wildlife Refuge in Pennsylvania. I was visiting an old Army buddy that I gave the photography bug to. The light was crappy all weekend. On my trek back home to Michigan I could see this beautiful red/orange sunrise in my review mirror. I just looked in the mirror and shook my head. O'well I will catch the sun on another day.

The larger version shows this to be a really marvelous image.

"Painterly" is definitely the right word for this one. Way beyond a regular photo in my mind, though the comp is about as perfect as could be. This simple comp works great with these textures and tones.
