Infinite Sands

While I think that this shot would also work in color, I feel that I like the mood of the B&W version much better. The eye is not as distracted by the blue-yellow contrast between the sky and sand, so the pattern in the sand that is leading into the scene is more prominent (so I think, at least).

Techs: Nikon D300, 17-55/2.8 DX @ 32 f/11, handheld; B&W conversion and quite some contrast increase in RAW conversion. Taken in Oman.

What do you think?

Wonderful capture Basil. B&W certainly works really well, the sand patterns come up great. I'd probably be tempted to try pulling back the level on the central bright patch just very slightly.

Basil:
Your are right about B&W working well in this image. I like the pattern on the sand but wish the pattern was not disrupted by the brighter central patch. May be toning down the bright spot may help - just need to experiment.

Great shot and conversion. The bright appearance of the dunes really works well here.

Although I haven't seen the color version I really like this, Basil.
Good contrast and great FG lines.

Really nice lines and undulating shapes throughout. The B&W works quite well.

Thanks for all your comments! I'll have a look at how I can best reduce the brightness of that central slope, and how that'll work. Thanks again! :toast:

Good shot, I agree B&W works well for the feel of the scene. Sublte lines in the foreground are greatly complemented by sand ridges. Too much sky for my taste - purely subjectively.

Excellent critique of your own image, Basis. I agree completely. Would also add that the white sand is simply beautiful and very appealing to the eye.
