Verdin

Verdin (Auriparus flaviceps)

Place: Water Ranch, Gilbert, AZ
Date: March 18, 2011
Equipment: Nikon D200, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8 & TC20E (2x), G1325, RRS BH-55, Sidekick
Exposure: ISO 400, aperture priority spot metered, 1/1250th @ f/8
Not baited or set-up
Raw, PS CS3 on Mac G4, 56% of frame – vertical cropped from horizontal

Although a common and easily found species here in the desert southwest Verdins are a challenge to photograph becasue they are so small and so hyperactive. When I get an opprtunity to photograph one that holds still in clear view I take it and worry about composition later. I would have preferred leaving more space on the left but a thick branch cuts across the ULC just beyond the place I cropped, and that required a similar crop from the right for balance.

Honest critiques requested; all comments appreciated. I hope you will check out the larger version if possible before commenting.

Nice shot :toast: The comp looks fine and the BG is soft enough that the other branches don't detract at all.

I like the pose and your choice of composition, Richard. You got a very nice head-turn and the thorns on the perch add a hint of habitat. The OOF branches are mildly distracting, but the verdin stands out well. The larger version is very sharp and detailed - I would have liked to see a bit more DoF to get the tail in focus as well.

Very nice Rich. Love the head turn and the BG is fine with me. The Branches are OOF enough to add a nice feel to the BG IMO, and if you would have went with more DOF to get the tail those branches would probably have become a distraction. Very nice detail and sharpness in the bird. Well done.

I don't know how you get them to pose like this. Seems whenever I find these birds they won't sit up and smile like this for me. About as clean a shot of this species as I've seen. I'm wondering a little why at f8 the tail isn't sharp on such a small bird, but I'd take it as is too. :toast:

A nice shot of a bird that I don't think I've even seen a photo of before as my bird ID book is for the eastern U.S. only. I like the pose/head turn, catchlight, and the detail in it's plumage. Very nice! :toast:

Very nice pose and head-turn. The centred comp works well here, perhaps du the perch leading to lower right corner. Excellent plumage detail too.

The techs look real nice on this Richard! I really like the head turn, details and colors. I actually like how you handled the BG streaked with other branches as well.

I have been hoping to get this good of shot of a verdin but no such luck. I am amazed you got him in such a clean environment. My shots always have twigs through the bird. Lovely light, colors, and details. Perfect headturn.

Wonderful shot of a Verdin, very sharp where it counts most, I like being able to see a little bit of the red spot on the wing.

I like this photo. I was at the Gilbert Water Ranch yesterday and had a difficult time capturing the verdins. They are very fast and tend to prefer the tangled branches. I agree that the background is so out of focus that it doesn't detract from the bird at all.
Really nice job!

perfect pose, nice setting and perch, and fantastic detail, Rich. I agree with you on your comp preference, but feel that this works well nonetheless.

I love that little curious stare. Spot metered huh? I'm curious, did you meter from the face or the white belly? Great shot sharp with nice light.

The composition works for me, Richard, though I might have taken just a hair more off the right side. Beautiful detail and light, and I like the effect of the slanted oof branches.

There were a few of these flitting around in South Texas, but they are nearly impossible ro catch.
Really nice pose, great detail and eye, and I think the BG is a positive addition - adds a lot of interest without drawing attention from the bird. All the "clean" BG's posted are starting to seem sterile to me.

Superb, Richard. Possibly the best Verdin photo I've seen. Hyperactive doesn't being to describe these guys; how you get them to hold still for you like this amazes me. No nits from me.

Spectacular Rich! That coquettish head turn is simply wonderful. I love this shot, especially considering the challenges of photographing the species.

Very nice Richard, tack sharp & natural colors.
I especially like the BG with its blues, and the OOF diagonal brown patterns :toast:
PS - I wish I'd been using the 2x with the vireo this am, it caught me by surprise.
