Powerful bird and such a thrill to see her this close. An adult fox is no match for this predator.

Edwin,
A very unique image with great sharpness and detail. I feel sorry for the fox though. Am I assuming correctly that this is a trained eagle belonging to a falconer?

Thanks Gary. This is a wild bird taken in Norway from a hide.

Interesting seeing these two species together. Did the eagle take down the fox, or did you find the carcass before setting up the blind?

This is incredible. I would love to hear more about the situation. Did you see this eagle taking down the fox? Is it their common prey? Very impressive picture :toast:

Great shot Edwin.
From the various comments from people There appears to be some confusion.
I presume you placed the fox in position in front of a hide ?
Cheers

Hi,

You presumed right John. Foxy was used as bait. The fox is a natural bait for the golden eagle.

Hi Edwin
I'm sure the experience of seeing a wild eagle this close was breathtaking - Mark Hamblin's recent blog on the trip makes it sound great (apart from the waiting!). As for the shot though, my critique would be that I've seen it time and time again from all the other photographers who've been on this trip. Still, it is a simple case of supply and demand; as long as photographers are willing to pay for the same shot Ole Martin doesn’t need to change the product!

Technically the image is perfect; aesthetically there are many elements to admire; overall though the experience it is like a visit to McDonalds. Give me your fantastic buzzard shots or the godwits at sunset, any day.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Cris,

I know what you mean but personally I can't get enough of sea and golden eagles and I think it's not going to happen in the near future. It's one of the best places in Europe to see these wonderful birds. I do agree it's not the most unique image but it's just great fun.

cheers,

Edwin

I am on the fence Edwin. I love eagles and would love to get hold of a fox as bait but I find both in the same shot a little off putting, the detract from one another. Perhaps if the fox were half buried in snow and not completely visible? Wonderful eagle though.

technically flawless Edwin and I can imagine what an amazing experience it would be to see one of these birds land in front of you. My only concern is how realistic this image is i.e. do golden eagles ever actually take foxes as prey? I've no idea but it would be interesting to know.

Hi Matt,

A fox is a natural prey for the golden eagle. They prefer mountain hare but they take down a fox or roe deer with ease.

Hi a fine Image Edwin, not so keen on the dead fox though needs some snow on it.

This is a nice picture, but poor fox. I Ilike how you got the golden eagles face. Nice colours in the picture, too.
