nice, Dan. I like the pose, the detail, the comp and the light.
if you look closely at the pale edges of the primaries on the near wing and the pale tips of the primaries of the far wing, it looks as though the sharpening has made the thin pale edges a little jagged--you may want to go back and mask out the sharpening on those small areas to see if that smooths them back out. a very minor nit on a nice image, easily fixed, and something I recently had pointed out to me on one of my own images or I probably would not have noticed.

Thanks for the comments, everyone, and thank you, Brian, for pointing out the sharpening artifacts. I resized it to meet site requirments and didn't do final QC before I posted. Use the same sharpening settings as on a slightly larger version and they produced artifacts at this resolution. I'll correct when I get a chance.

Nice head turn and look from the redpoll. The background colors compliment the overall image and interesting feather patterns but they do seem just a tad over sharpened. Good job in getting this shot. I also enjoyed going through your Pbase gallery, great stuff.

This is really nice. I like the bird, perch, and BG. I agree that maybe a bit oversharpened, but that can be easily fixed. Very nice.

A strong image IMO. Nice light and head turn and the background works well for me, Looks sharp at this size though it's pretty small with this much black frame included in the 720 pixels. Nicely done Dan.

A bit oversharpened, but otherwise a very good shot of this pretty little girl (or first year subadult male). Is the lump above the bill a fungal infection?

Outstanding image, Dan. The redpoll really pops out against the gray background. The entire bird is sharp, you have excellent details in the feathers, a great head turn and a simple, but effective perch.
Thanks for sharing this.

This is a beauty!
Great colors, good head-turn, and simple BG.
How do these little things survive in the dark, frozen winters??

I appreciate all of the comments. Funny how serene this little guy looks sitting there. In reality the little buggers jump around like water on a hot skillet. Also the time of year this was taken they typically look like little tennis balls with their feathers all fluffed up against the cold.
Regarding the sharpening, there is very little applied to this image. I toyed around with both USM and Topaz Infocus plugin and couldn't get rid of the artifacts in the primaries. Finally figured out that even with the unsharpened image, the banded appearance on the primaries appears if the resolution drops below around 150ppi. Just a digital phenomenon with the particular pattern of lines at low resolution. Not a problem when printed.
