White-eyed Vireo

by Howard Cheek

Gallery: AvianPosted March 26, 2011104 views9 comments
Shot this little one about an hour ago.

Interesting fact: The only fossil record in North America for the entire family Vireonidae is a wing bone of a White-eyed Vireo from the late Pleistocene of Florida, from approximately 400,000 years ago.
F/6.3, 1/1000th, ISO 500, 1D M3, 300mm f/2.8 + 1.4x & natural light.
About 72% of full frame.

Great image Howard, the pose and the perch are great, the background greens are also a nice compliment to the yellow green of the vireo. If I could have anything changed it would be that whiteness from another branch coming up vertically behind the bird, it's a bit distracting if it could be a bit darker it wouldn't pull my eye so much.

Neat bird and I like the cobwebs on the perch here Howard. I think your comp works pretty well here but I could also see cropping some from the bottom and going with a squarish crop here to make the bird bigger in the frame. :toast:

Good detail and textures. The bird colors stand out nicely from that creamy background.

Nice, Howard. I like the comp here--works very well with the branches, and I like the spider webs too.. I would think about darkening the branches some. Very interesting about the vireo fossil. Here we have exceptional faunal remains (including lots of birds) in our caves from the end of the Pleistocene, but as you say, no vireos (of course, vireos probably don't spend a lot of time in caves, so I guess unless a predator took one there, it wouldn't be the place to look.

Nice capture, Howard: this bird is sure giving us the eye. Fine colors: bird and bg. I too would like to see the bird larger in the frame and the branches (especially the large foreground branch) darkened a bit. :toast:

A very natural looking comp Howard. Love the light and the great look at this bird's white eye. In the larger version the bird is just shy of tack sharp, but works well none the less. Nice capture of a cool bird.

Nice one Howard, I like the overall composition, good eye contact and the detail looks good on the larger version (along with the spider webs). Well done.
