The Palouse, from Steptoe Butte, Eastern Washington State, August 2007
Canon 1DsII, 70-200 @ 70mm, .3sec @ f/14, cropped from the top, Nik Silver EFX

I'm planning a trip to the Palouse this summer and decided to go back through my archives to see how some of them might look in B&W. This is from Steptoe Butte in the late afternoon with a very wild and violent storm approaching. A few minutes after this shot, I was in the center of a wild storm...fun and scary all in one.

I really liked the color version, but this black and white really captures the ominous nature of the storm, I think. It really was an impressive wall of darkness.

Comments and critiques appreciated.

The mood of this image is very ominous. The b&w makes the landscape beneath the storm almost abstract and I kinda lose the sense of scale. I feel a little like I'm on a high barren ridge, face to face with a fast moving storm front. Pretty powerful image. Nicely done

Hi David,
I really like this image. For me, the chaotic patterns in the rolling fields make this image ominous. The lack of an apparent pattern is unsettling and it adds to the menace of the storm.
Nice work!

This really works well as a b&w. There's a mirroring of textures between the ground and the clouds but they're held separate by the dark band punctured only by that bolt of lightning. Very cool.

Definitely, this has a very ominous feel to it David. I have not seen you color version but IMO, the B&W is very effective here giving the scene an abstract quality. Wonderful tonal range as well.
