Thornwick, Yorkshire
by Lizzie Shepherd
I went off to the Yorkshire coast one day last week to suss out a few locations I've been meaning to visit for a while. This one was towards the end of the day as the sun was getting low and giving off some lovely warm light. No doubt it will be better a little later in the year but I wanted to see what opportunites are there.
There are some gorgeous rocks, boulders, cliffs, caves, etc. I was struggling a bit to find a good angle with strong lead in lines, given the angle of light and also the tide levels. But this is probably my favourite of the evening. I'd ideally liked about a 22mm lens here I think - just to get a bit more on the LH side, although the f/g seaweed and shells would have then been a bit central... I also find the dark boulders towards the middle of the frame a little distracting. Any thoughts welcome - I'm sure I can improve on this but given the constraints and that this was really meant as an initial recce, I was reasonably happy.
Hand blended in photoshop from 3 exposures. 24 TSE tilted around 2.5 degrees I think, 3 stop hard ND grad substituting as a plain old ND filter and CPL.

4 commentsI like the rich golden light on the yonder cliff and the clarity throughout. The textures of the foreground rocks and the crustaceans/weed on it are quite interesting and different to other "seascape" shots that might be similarly composed. Water blur is just right IMHO.
Mark - I guess I just feel that bottom left corners is a tiny bit constrained - probably another 1mm would have done it to be fair! ;-) I don't feel it's a big issue but I'm always looking to see what I can improve upon hence the comments. Anyway, very glad it works for you as is
