Burning My Boats

I was just starting large-format work when I climbed up the highest dunes at Great Sand Dunes in Colorado at dawn.

It was the most amazing day, as fog came in from the southwest, eventually enshouding all the dunes. Before the sun came up, I noticed these colors in the sky.

I wasn't comfortable enough with my 4x5 to get it set up in time, so I took a few shots with my Nikon before the day was basically already over because of the fog.

After this trip, I stopped loading film in the 35, essentially "burning my boats", to force me to shoot with the 4x5 from then on. :)

Nikon FE, 105mm, Velvia 50. 2 seconds at f 16

Nice colors and play with the layers in the foreground, Michael. Unfortunately the compression looks very bad though.

hi Michale, looks great but the resolution is too low, did you check the right file before uploading the image ??

Ditto what Andreas said, Michael. These layers are really nice, just maybe needs better sharpness.

With the comp and cool layering there would appear to be a nice image in there but something has been lost in the translation to the web.

Thanks, everyone.

I realize this scan is not the best. I did it years ago and never cleaned it up to my satisfaction. I fear that the slide got so much dust on it that it might not be usable any more.

Great to hear from you Gary! I hope you've fully recovered? I'm still in NC (after 6 months in AZ back in '08).
