Roadside Falls

I liked the way the sunrise filtered through the trees and hit a section of these roadside falls in the southeastern corner of Mt. Ranier NP last fall. I always appreciate the opportunities to grow through your feedback. Canon EOS 5D MkII; 2 sec @ f/14; 35mm; ISO 100; 16-35 f/2.8 LII; tripod, cable release.

A pretty scene, and I like the dappled light. Excellent shutter speed for the water action. My only concern is the composition. I think I would have rather seen this shifter more to the left instead of cutting off the waterfall on the left side. The rock on the right is nice, but IMO the waterfall is more important.

Craig, I love the light-play and think your processing is spot-on (I might pull back a bit on the vignetting, but that is personal preferrence). I'm not sure if the rt quarter holds enough of my interest to balance the falls. I don't know what was to the left of the lower falls, but I'm wondering if you could have panned left a bit. Either way, I would suggest a crop from the right.

I love the colours and water movement here Craig. I agree with Bill that moving the composition to the left would have generated a better "flow" of the viewer's eye through the cascade. Don't know if this was possible (where you on the edge of an abyss? )

Thanks so much for the critiques. I've tried to address the issue of composition with this cropped version. I've also opened the dark corners (for the life of me, I don't remember adding a vignette). I did have room to the right. I have other shots without the nice sunlight that show that there was room. I guess I got too excited when the sun broke through and failed to pay enough attention to the comp. Unfortunately, the light didn't last very long due to passing clouds and the sun moving up the sky.

Nice one Craig, I think the repost is a better balanced composition.

I'm all for the repost Craig, wonderfully seen and recorded in my opinion.

I like the beautiful cascades and the dappled light shining like a spotlight on the falls. The color is rich and vibrant and brings this to life. From a compositional standpoint, I find the branches on the right hand side of the frame to be a little distracting. If it were mine, I might consider a crop from the right into more of a 4X5 format so that less of the branches are visible in the frame. That is really a picky nit for what is otherwise an exceptional shot.

Edit: I commented before scrolling down. I just saw the crop and that is exactly what I had in mind. Finish processing the crop and you have a winner!! :toast:

Love the feel of this, but the right side just isn't adding much to the scene. For myself, it feels like the vignette is a bit to strong or obvious - ack! just saw the square crop; way much better!

Hi Craig,

Exceptional processing and light. I think this is a fantastic image. The dark corners are a little obvious, especially the upper left one. Before I read everyones' comments I too thought about a crop, however in conclusion I think the mossy boulder and branch pointing towards the falls holds enough visual interest to stand on its own. I like the original better than the repost. The repost feels a bit too tight to me, but obviously I am in the minority. Fantastic work.

Gorgeous color and light Craig. I definitely prefer the comp in your rerpost. Nice exposure for the water as well.
