Before Sunset

On my final day in Torres del Paine last year, I spent part of an afternoon hiking a short trail in search of wildlife. I was hoping for pumas of course (fat chance), but instead met several guanacos and some rheas along the way. As was typical of our stay, clouds were ever-present, and continued to roll in toward us as the sun was setting. On a far hillside, one guanaco stood watch while others grazed and chased each other about.

I like it, Max. The slope, gradated sky, and open space all point to the Guanaco.

Cool shot Max - at first glance I was put off by the blinding light on the horizon, but upon further examination I think it works well here.

Very nice composition and silhouette Max, great to see such wonderful use of an opportunity in what most would dismiss for the "poor lighting" conditions right out of hand ;^)

Good one, Max. You maximized your circumstance. I like the comp, the unusual looking sky, the angled skyline and the fact that in the larger version one can see just enough detail in the landscape to provide a sense of 3-D.

A very strong graphic image Max, it works well for me as is, but do feel that a slight head turn would have given an even better profile silhouette. :toast:

Vincent, I may even have a shot with the head in profile, but for whatever reason I gravitated toward the version with the angled head. I know Brad has mentioned that he prefers images in which the subject doesn't appear to notice the photographer, but it could be that I like that the "sentinel" has its eye on us.

Nice sense of remote wilderness and solitude. Simple, pleasing composition.
