Brown hare

by David Sewell

Gallery: Regional: UKNPPosted April 13, 2011171 views4 comments
After weeks when I either didn't see one, or only had them at a great distance, my last visit to Elmley really put me amongst the hares, with close views of five different animals, none closer than this one. This is one of a pair, I presume the female. Slightly cropped on the left hand side for composition.

Thanks for looking,

David

I think it is more likely that she is tired after being chased by a male for days on end! Apparently male brown hares will remain with the female for up to five days at the end of the pairing process. Presumably this is to stop any other male mating with her. This one did make a half-hearted attempt to get away from the (presumed) male, but she moved slowly enough to make sure he kept up with her.

You've done well to control what seemed to be very difficult lighting condition.
